There are only so many entrance points, and there are plenty of companies whose job it is to count people like this, so I'm sure they were aware of how to count people coming in/going out.

It's really a general estimation, not an exact number... and the margin of error gets bigger is tickets are not involved.
Basically, how it's done in other events, protests, and other types of gathering:

My goodness, seeing the numbers for that makes San Diego Comic Con look like small potatoes. It would be hard to imagine without actually being there...

It's as if a typhoon swept through Comiket with a population number that high within those three days...

One of these days I would love to go. Though I doubt I'd be able to get the sort of stuff I'd buy through US customs, so maybe there's no point...

which is the real question? are those numbers actually correct?

cause for a long time now,any time i hear of comiket market, it mainly only have connections to some circles and artists that do those ero fanart doujins (which i collect and download like there's nobodys business) as well as some merchandise. i know the otaku community is strong and all, but if comiket market only does ero doujins and such, the numbers for those attendance are all but impossible.

Comiket this year was still massive! Obviously wasn't a noticeable difference if you were there lol (that opening day line didn't seem to shrink much either )

When I went the second time, I had a conversation with one of the staff members. The real numbers are actually a lot higher, but they're forced to bring the official number down to around 500,000 because of laws regarding building capacity and whatnot. Seriously, have you seen the crowds? It's crazy.

Also, we don't usually get much of the non-ero stuff over here because there's simply no demand for it in the West. Only one day is dedicated to male-oriented ero doujinshi and the rest are BL, original work and more. Not to mention, there is a whole market for doujin software, games, music, photo books that we again don't see much of over here. (That aside, don't underestimate the power of porn.)

You should check out the free online Comiket catalog sometime to see what circles are participating for yourself. (^.^) I used it myself when I was planning my trip and it's amazing. No need to lug around an entire dictionary.

They can't lie on that - that makes it a fire hazard with legal repercussions.

Hardgear, considering how crowded it gets, I think this would be more of a 1-person adventure. The customs thing would especially be awkward with body pillows.
