I hope Crunchyroll gets this.

Also, I hope Kumiko ends up with Reina, and not Boring Trombone Boy.

I agree. This releases on my Birthday, and Yuri would be a nice present.

Considering the canon is het ending, the most they could probably do is make it ambiguous. Lets hope the same script writer is involved this time. He/she apparently made changes so that kumiko has practically no romantic feelings for the dude (whatever his name is) and focuses her troubles on her music/ self development problems rather than boy problems.

Reminds me of Kunihiko Ikuhara always trying to kill off Tuxedo Mask... or at least neuter him out of existence.

Hmpf... this anime was a yuri fanbait from the very beginning, which is rather unfortunate for straight persons. Too sad for the author because she was bashed by haters since she herself doesn't like the Reina x Kumiko ship, thus she made Shuuichi the obvious winner in the end.

Very good! It's hilarious.

The broadcast on Tokyo MX is 30 minutes earlier than it was for S1 (likely because Aniplex's re-broadcast of SAO is during that slot). KBS Kyoto's broadcast is a day later (likely due to ABC Asahi broadcasting in the same area and taking priority due to other productions w/KyoAni and Pony Canyon). TV Aichi is 30 minutes later than S1's was, and Sun Television isn't broadcasting this season. BS-11's time is exactly the same.

On a related note, I've been reading the spinoff novels Takeda wrote about the Rikka High School Marching Band (shown in episode 5 and Kumiko's friend Azusa is the main protagonist). These would be fantastic to see animated, but I have my doubts we'll see it. It's another set of characters entirely, so you'd lose a lot of the fans who have grown attached to the characters at Kita Uji. At least they're doing well for Takarajimasha, who just announced that the Euphonium series has 790,000 copies in print with the pressing of the second Rikka novel yesterday. One more novel was solicited today in Japan for October and it's a fanbook with some newly written shorts like detailing the preparations Yuuko and the others make after the third years leave the club upon the finish of the main series novels and a collaboration concert with the Rikka concert band (and Azusa!).

Yeah its pretty obvious the plot won't move beyond Yuri bait. It would have been nice if they actually picked a side though. Now trombone boy is so utterly boring and underdeveloped it'd be really boring if Reina end up with him but at the same time they won't go against the author wish and go full Yuri (if they were gonna do that they would have done so in S1). So we're probably going to end up with no clear resolution.

Maybe the best we could get is if they introduce a new male character, make him interesting and develop him and then have Reina fall for him. Of course my personal favorite would be for them to defy the author and go full Yuri, I'd get to enjoy a satisfying conclusion and see all the knife throwing between the studio and the author. I'd absolutely kill for a Marching Band anime, topped only in my desire for a colorguard-specific one Smile

I'm pretty deep in the band world and every marching band person I've introduced Euphonium to has had a blast, even those that didn't really have much concert band experience per se (such as the aforementioned guard folks). If you're around music you pick up on enough of the drama already, and if you're on a sports/competitive arts team, then the major issues usually have parallels in your field.

Actually, I'd think that "having new characters" is a step Kyoto and the author would like to take. A spin off series broadens the narrative world and provides a new entry point for viewers. This wouldn't really be the case for the US TV market -- no one wants "Saved By the Bell: The College Years" -- but anime tends to have larger changes in "seasons" or "second serieses", so I don't think it'd be a real stretch. And the cross-overs you mentioned could be thrown in for good measure.

So long as the narrative and production quality is on a par with what we've had so far (and they're a great studio for that), I can't imagine it not pulling similar numbers in release.

Takeda mentions in her comment from that Takarajimasha PR that she wanted to depict how concert band/marching band is at a powerhouse school that's known nationally in contrast to an upstart like Kita Uji, thus the spinoff. It definitely helps flesh out the world more and references back to the original story feel more natural when it's 'hey, did you hear that Kita Uji is going to the Kansai Concert?!" "No way! Man, I wish I head heard them back at the Kyoto Concert when I had the opportunity" conversation-styling instead of random dialogue similarities or namedrops. Given that Takeda originally had Euphonium ending with the first novel (and with them only getting dud gold), it's nice to have Azusa get some depth alongside the characters at Kita Uji who get depicted in the second/third novels.

For every instance where we see something like Love Live Sunshine or Idolm@ster Cinderella Girls where different characters are in a similar universe and it performs close to/on par with the original, we have something like Miyakawa-ke or Nagato Yuki-chan which suffer immensely from not being the original material. Producers want the late night fans to get attached to characters so they'll buy merchandise and Euphonium wasn't a big enough franchise to take the risk of alienating fans. There's certainly more Free! fans than High Speed! fans and they even share two main characters. While I'd definitely like to see a Rikka adaptation (Azusa is a much better protagonist and there's a great gradual build compared to Takeda's first Euphonium novel), I have my doubts we'll see it. There's other content that is available.

(On a side note, you'd get your wish as Amika, the secondary female lead in Rikka, is attempting to be in the color guard for the marching performances.)

Usually I'm not big on shipping, but I'd rather the main girl end up alone than paired up with the Trombone Guy. They just have no chemistry, she's clearly not into him, and he seems far less motivated about band than she is, so it seems like a weak point to hang your romance on that.

And the series was at its finest when dealing with actual musical stuff, so there's that, too.

I agree. But there always has to be some male love interest, even if it is completely forced like this one. Because what other value does a woman have than to be with a man? Rolling Eyes

But then there was that time that Asuka was asked if she had a boyfriend, and she's like "No! My euphonium is my only love!" Lol.

As a former trombone player myself, I should be upset. But I must admit, Kumiko and Reina were awfully cute together! Laughing
