One of the things this manga series does extremely well is its magic, and that comes through in this anime as well, especially the opening scene in Angelica's shop.

The comparison's to Harry Potter are commonplace, but I think this series does better: it merits, in its magic at least, a comparison to Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel.

So is this one of those prequels that you'll really only appreciate if you've already been reading the manga, or does it work all the same on its own?

If you don't read the manga I find that you would be very lost

^ I disagree with you. I haven't read the manga and watched it anyway. I wasn't lost at all, as it seems it's just going to be a self contained prequel to the original manga.

I believe the magic and the sense of wonder was the best part of this OVA. I particularly enjoyed the first scene, spoiler[when they were preparing the books for Chise], and the scene where they spoiler[started cleaning Elias office.] All those little details, like the fairies and monsters, and the nice and fluid animation were key to these parts.

I thoroughly enjoyed this first part.

I'm not sure I love anime projects like this. It is just complicated and hard for me to invest in, for some reason. I just want it to be a TV series, or a movie, and not to rely on knowledge of a source. Basically, I'm not a fan of multi-media projects. I like uniformity. Maybe it's related to my OCD, but having a franchise split up into different mediums and formats, and not being able to stick with one version to get the whole story, really bothers me. Sad

Bear in mind that in Japan, this is bundled with the manga, so you dont have to go out of your way to watch it.

I've not read the manga, but I absolutely loved this. It really brings you in to its magical world and I didn't feel like I was missing anything by not knowing the source material. Give it a try!

Tell you one thing though, the manga's gone straight onto my shopping list.

If you don't read the manga there's a lot of terminology you won't understand and you won't get the significance of what the characters are talking about or why they act the way they do. This OVA starts off somewhere after vol 4.

Specifically between 4 and 5, since spoiler[Chise has her ring still].

So are we going to spoiler[see Chise in slavery at some point, or has the OVA pretty much skipped over that part? I think the story could delve really well into her psychological state, providing her with a dark backstory.]

@Lord Dcast

The current OVA just shows her as a very unhappy child due to spoiler[her mother's suicide and the ability to see things others can't.]There are two additional OVA's to come so it is possible.

It's nice that CR is getting more of the limited theatrical-run titles. Now certain theatrically-run titles not getting a home video release here is kind of balanced by this.
