Surprised they still make these games. Never been a huge fan of them in the past but I heard they got less grindy and frustrating counter-intuitive in design over time. It was never the non-linearity or often unorthodox level and game decisions that bothered me with SaGa in the past but just because the way they executed them just made the games unnecessarily unfun to play or required you to do something really silly and only slightly less time consuming to speed things up. I don't know to me it shouldn't take hours of wrestling with a games systems just to be ready to take on the next dungeon even if you know exactly where you're going like it did when the guy that makes these games created FFII or the Gameboy games that were renamed to Final Fantasy Legend for example.

I don't recall this franchise ever being associated with Final Fantasy even though it was created by Square. According to the article the first SaGa game released in North America was titled Final Fantasy Legend. I bought it when it first came out, loved it but it had quite a learning curve compared to any of the FF games, and really a quite different battle system. It's title in North America was SaGa Frontier, unchanged from the original Japanese title. In addition I think back then there was no "Square Enix." It was just Square or Squaresoft. Enix was still a separate company not associated with Sony or Square.

The SaGa series is still popular with Japanese audiences (as well as with a niche circle overseas). It's not as if the franchise has been declared dead or hasn't had a new game in years so I'm not sure why you'd find it surprising they "still make these games".
