I wonder how much money Anno, himself, is making from the Godzilla movie. I don't really know how those sorts of contracts work, but I would imagine he probably gets to keep a much greater percentage of the profits from his own Evangelion stuff.
Anyway, always good to have reassurance that he is working on Eva 4. I am being patient, but there is a point where I wonder if he'll be alive to see it through. Waiting for this feels like waiting for the ending of One Piece, sometimes. |

I think they should make the sequel after the last Eva movie. It's been in development limbo long enough.

Anno himself probably makes more money directly from the godzilla film than from Evangelion, since Toho hired him to direct it, but for Evangelion he... hired himself (and probably isn't taking that much of a direct salary because of it). But his production company, Khara, makes way more on Evangelion since they're the main funder of it, whereas for Godzilla, although they did some sfx work on it, it wasn't like they were part of the production committee (or if they were, it was a small portion). In any case the one thing we all don't need to worry about is Hideaki Anno running out of cash. I mean his wife isn't exactly a slouch either in the income department. |

Indeed, it's always reassuring when Anno confirms that he's chugging along on the final Evangelion film! Even if it's only a very small sliver of detail. I'm planning on making an hour long trip to see Shin Godzilla in October and I'm really pumped for it. I can't imagine a sequel not happening, given the film's major success. And while it seems clear that Anno won't be contributing to it (or at least not as a director or writer) the next time around, what he kickstarted with this one definitely did its job of rejuvenating the franchise and the public's interest in it. Though I worry that this new rebooted continuity will devolve into the more simplistic "VS" or "Godzilla is a national hero" plots and lose its mature and apocalyptic edge without him on board, as the series has done in decades past. Only time will tell.

Has Anno ever directed a live-action production before? It seems quite a leap from anime to working with live actors unless they are mostly pawns in a special-effects extravaganza.

He has done a few in the past, actually. Love and Pop, the live action Honey and Cutie movie, Shiki-Jitsu, and a short film, Railroad and Girl(not sure if there is an English translation for that. |
