I'm not familiar with her work personally, but 1. More women of color in Hollywood films is a good thing; 2. More women in action films is a good thing; the first Pacific Rim movie only had one female main character, and this one will have at least two! Baby steps!

Pacific Rim has less to do with anime than Michael Bay's Transformers movies.

If I recall correctly Del Toro originally wanted to make Pacific Rim a franchise including an anime. He also seems to like to work with Japanese people/companies (Rinko Kikuchi in the original film and he has collaborated with Hideo Kojima) so if he did get his wish I wouldn't have been surprised if he had a Japanese studio animate it. I wonder if he still has a hand in casting and stuff. I hope Jing Tian plays a Chinese/Taiwanese character because I would find it strange if she ended playing a Japanese/Korean character (besides Korea wasn't involved in the first movie). |
