This fallacious argument of online piracy being the equivalence of stealing a physical item has been debunked thousands of times already. You cannot steal a digital copy. A digital copy can be copied millions of times without costing a single cent. The act of stealing something is depriving a person or business of an actual physical object. Something that took materials and cost money to make.
As for intellectual property though, I'm all for artists making money off of their ideas. What draws people to piracy are things like DRM, high costs, and difficulty in obtaining the item itself. If a company can make something easily obtainable and reasonably priced, than you will see an increase of profit, not a decrease. |

Viewing things illegally actually allows people to experience more shows, thus increasing the possibility of them purchasing dvd/bd's.
"it's essentially the same act as leaving a restaurant without paying or shoplifting. If that is continued, shops will go out of business, won't they?" This is ridiculous. For one, you can't relate two essential to life items to an entertainment product. |

I see the argument he's making in regards to his tv show (without people viewing it legally, the TV company isn't getting ad revenue from it (or something to do with ads, anyway), viewing figures can't be tallied, and it ends up seeming like an unprofitable business, even if it has millions of fans, but they only watch it illegally). But also, there's the other side to consider, when a programme/movie isn't available any other way illegal downloading might be easier or you only want to watch one show, but it's only available through a tv bundle deal (ie wanting to watch Game of Thrones, when it's only available on pay-tv). But with more legal streaming services, illegal uploading and downloading should be decreasing (theoretically).
I only illegally download/stream things if they're not available (or easily available) in my country to purchase. There will always be Anime piracy no matter what some people may say or do sure you can lessen it by making new laws but it will still always be there.

This makes me wonder what the production costs for making the film was. For a film such as this to have a representative concerned about piracy makes me wonder. I get it, companies want to increase their profits as much as possible and the artists what to get paid their value. Also the extra funds could be allocated to expanding a studio or be put towards another big budget production. However the opposite end to that is how much is the film gonna be when it hits Blu-ray and DVD? With potentially such a large profit being earned from the film's theater run, can the company justify charging standard Japanese prices for the Blu-ray and DVDs of this film? Anyone know the budget of the film? |

The ever going argument about anime piracy. It's a case by case basis. For example, if you're a One Piece fan living in North America, have a stable internet connection, and a somewhat steady income then good luck convincing me you can't afford less than $10 a month for a subscription to stream the show legitimately. But if say you wanted to watch Heidi or any World Masterpiece Theater series for that matter then what choice do you have other than to spend an exuberant amount of money importing DVD's or Blu-rays with no subs?

If they're going to shut it down, at least do it in Japan, where streaming is not that big. Because, as the other users said, it can actually help with revenue. I'll admit I used to do it, and sometimes still do for subs, but thanks to that I decided to get a Funimation account, and now am trying to exclusively do legal streaming (I don't have the money for home media).
