I was never able to get into this Kaoru Mori is a great artist but I was never made to care by any her storytelling as for every poignant human moment in it. Mori feels more interested in technical and artistic achievement at the expense of storytelling that makes me feel something.making me think "it's great that you are passionate about something and have real talent but please try to make me care."

Yeah her stories are less plot based and more about us getting a glimpse into a past world. She's apparently ridiculously accurate when it comes to the details of the era she's writing about. I can see why some wouldn't like it, her books are like a lazy rainy Sunday afternoon. Chill, easygoing, relaxing, not much happening but still pleasant for many.

This particular plot arc was a definite low point for the series. Luckily the next one is one of the best! Pariya is a GREAT character.

If you stopped reading early on, you could try again with vol 6. I think that one is my favourite and the one I still feel emotional about (2 years after I first read it), for its handling of conflict and relationships between family and fellow townsfolk. Vol 7's jump to all-new characters and a new art style was a little jarring for me, and I'm happy that v8 returns to the artist's (as she describes it) "beef-stew" drawing style :) Hearty and warm...

I'm reading some of these comments and I wonder if the meaning of 'plot' for them is very narrow. Otoyomegatari has a very light-hearted story and I very much so welcome it.

I love seeing the everyday life of the characters and how they interact with each other.
How it's portrayed is very similar to some popular slice of life anime but with a bit of a serious tone. Accompanied with her artwork, there's really not much to ask for.
I do agree with the author of this article that this volume is quite lackluster compared to the previous entries but as for the manga itself - it's a worth while read.

I wish there were a digital version available of this series.
