Still wish this had a dub.

The tonal shifts are what killed this series for me if it had stayed serious I probably would have liked it more but instead, it would switch between comedy and drama in a way that felt offputting. the main romance is handled well it just feel undercut by the comedy.

While I would agree the the comedy elements are too often a distraction, the only place in the series where I thought they actually undercut anything (or created a tonal shift issue) was at the end of episode 1. And the last episode (really, the last two episodes) definitely does not do any of those.

The final arc *was* outstanding... but boy was it painful to get there. If I could send a message back to myself in an earlier time it would be "skip PlasMem".

To say I was disappointed by Plastic memories is an understatement. It's not a terrible show by any means, but I remember being moved, awestruck, and fascinated by what happened in the beginning of the show. The possibilities were endless, as well as the philosophical and social commentary.

Instead, I watched a generic, trope-filled romcom with a sprinkle of science fiction, many plot holes, half-baked concepts, and unexplained loose ends. You could have wrote th exact same story, remove all of the giftia nonsense, and just give Isla a terminal illness.

As much as I loved the first two episodes, I can't give this mediocre series any more than a mediocre 5/10. What a waste of potential.

Every time I hear this (and you're definitely not the only person I've seen make comments like these), I have to wonder what the heck people were expecting out of the series. After all, it did explore some concepts that couldn't have been just done with a terminal illness, and in much more than just a superficial way. (It devoted a whole episode to the recycling business, for instance.) Granted, there was much more that it could have done, but not within the constraints of a 13 episode series and not without significantly taking away from the series' emotional core.

Really hated the 2nd half. It went from a unique take on the android/robot genre...exploring human stories that were created thanks to the robots...to being a standard "tragic girl" story with a massive scientific flaws that kept it from being remotely believable and thus I had no "feels" at the end.

I remember that when PM premiered a bunch of people were really hyped about the high quality of the show. But I was one of the few that saw problems from the very first episode; so I never expected much.

I agree. Plastic Memories would benefited a lot with another cour of run time.

Sniff. At the end, if I were Tsukasa, Kazuki would've needed to drag me out of the ferris wheel, cause I'dve been a catatonic wreck at that point. As for the gigantic sci-fi holes, well, look at it this way: at least Giftia aren't nuclear-powered.

To have not been such an incoherent mess. The show tried to be high concept SF, a tragic romance, a romcom, an office drama, and an office comedy - all at the same time.

The problem wasn't that it didn't cover things, it's that it swerved all over the place trying to decide what they were going to cover. The problem isn't that they were constrained by a 13 episode season... it's that they tried to cram ten pounds into a five pound sack.

While I can't dispute a lot of the rest of what you said, I'll take issue with "incoherent." I always thought that the series was pretty clear about what the main direction of its story was, and just about everything which happened in the series aimed in that direction: building the relationship between Tsukasa and Isla while allowing him to witness the ins and outs of both Giftias and romance.

On the other hand I get the incoherent comment, this series seemed to stumble around abit trying to figure out what direction it wanted to take. It's been awhile since I have seen this so its not fresh in my mind, and the "elephant in the room" is the reason why I won't be picking this title up. However I agree with the general sentiment of this series started with any number of possibilities and in simple terms did just default back to the standard anime tropes. Not a bad series in any terms.. but not a great series either.

A great series. One of the few that I have actually convinced my wife to watch. She never gets emotional over anime. She did on this one. So did I. Also, a dub would be nice.
