So I just picked this up, and I'm not entirely sure why this series is apparently listed as "shounen" several places. How.

Because G Fantasy is categorized as a shounen magazine. Though, most of the mangaka for it these days are female, so titles in it tend to have a high fem-appeal.

This has been on my To Read list for a while. I never expected it would get an anime.

A quick google search and you would have found out that GF targets young readers, girls and boys in Highchool and Juniour High.
Other Square Enix magazines/web comics that also are shared between girls and boys are: Gangan Online(Doesn't have a target audience) & Shounen Gangan(targets young girls as well now, since 2011).

Mag GARDEN which used to be under Square Enix.
Alterna pixiv, Eden, Beat's: No target audience
Blade A, Blade Plus= Shoujo(Seen some manga databases categorizing these as shounen)
Comic Blade=Shared.
Comic Blade Brownie(Spin off of Comic Blade, on hiatus)= Shared.
Comic Garden=Replaced Comic Blade in 2014, after it got defunct, just like Comic Blade it's also shared between both girls and boys. Donten ni Warau, Rengoku ni Warau, Mahou Tsukai no Yome, Peace Maker Kurogane etc. are here.

A boy. I like to think of him as Ciel from Kuroshitsuji.

I quite enjoyed what I've read of this one, so this could be a great anime adaptation. Hopefully they don't alter the original character designs as much as they did for Snow White with the Red Hair - still a little sore over that - as this series also has a nicely distinctive style.

BrainBlow, some shounen series have shoujo-style art and vice versa.
