Eleven million members (per Wiki) in Japan!? Really?? That's what, 8% of Japan's population give or take a few points. That seems really high.

Never before have I ever heard of an idol group that was centered around religion...
 This could get quite interesting if Happy Science becomes successful in their first stages of stardom.

I like how they deny being a cult by immediately making one the most cult-like statements possible. |

After reading the article, I'm now starting to think that the people within this idol group may be unknowingly traversing in precarious territory... Cult-like messages like the ones mentioned is a potential sign of the party's leader being a megalomaniac. |

You'd be surprised about how many buildings Happy Science has in Japanese cities. They are just as bad as Trump buildings. You can't miss them cause they say Happy Science in large letters.

This is blatant propaganda to attract young people into a cult. Gross.
Seriously though, the stuff they preach is kinda hilarious. I kinda wanna see some of the anime they made for a bad movie night (I remember reading about one or two on the Pile of Shame collumn or something). It's like if the Scientology episode of South Park was trying to take itself seriously. |

So, how does an organisation which aspires to follow "The Principles of Happiness, also known as the modern Fourfold Path, consist of four principles: Love, Wisdom, Self-reflection and Progress" (Happy Science UK)...
...combine that with 'promoting political views that include support for Japanese military expansion, support for the use of nuclear power, and denial of historical events such as the Nanjing Massacre in China' (political wing, the Happiness Realization Party)? No, of course it doesn't make sense. No cult ever does.No religion either but at least they can be somewhat reasoned with (no, America is NOT an encourageable example...). |

They're pretty much all over Japan. Though, I find the Scientology (sp?) building in Shinjuku more bigger and perturbing then anything else (also makes me wonder how THAT group got the funds to build that thing in Japan, and near the train station I pass through). Cult groups are nothing new in Japan, but seeing them try to make an Idol group is a whole new level of not-surprising-but-still-disturbing for me... |

I find this disturbing and not cute at all.
Using your followers to attract new converts all because those followers were cute. I wonder why the Japanese authorities haven't investigated the cult for any criminal activities or fraud? |

Probably because Japan, my like most modern countries, requires that there actually be evidence of criminal activity or fraud before launching an investigation. Using cute young members to recruit (neither new nor unusual) is neither criminal or fraud (in civilized countries). Despite the "cult" label (a term that's thrown about far too freely IMO) there's no evidence of criminal activity or fraud, and (at least in the English language press) I can find no evidence they've ever been suspected of such. |
