I'm still surprised that the biggest anime market outside Japan still hasn't gotten all Ghibli films.

Anyone who still has their old Disney Kiki VHS, look in the corner--
Back before the Ghibli deal (and the Mononoke Wars), Disney originally thought Kiki was going to be the first in their new label of "International world-animation", since France/Africa's "Kirikou and the Sorceress" was also cleaning up at the NYCFF.

Now the irony is, GKids has become the new "International world-animation" label for all the foreign titles, and they take all the obscure Ghibli movies that Disney DOESN'T want for not being Miyazaki's.

I attribute this to the fact that Ocean Waves is quite distinct from Miyazaki's output. Being a standard high-school romance, it is safe to say it enjoys no appeal amongst the youngest of audiences, and unlike Takahata's works, its critical reception is perhaps not quite sufficient to overcome the barrier this creates.

It is nonetheless one of my favourite Ghibli works. Though little of note occurs within story itself, its general pacing is as close to perfect as I could hope for.

Now all we'll need is Yamadas on BD and we should have everything in America.

I believe the real problem with the home video rights for Ocean Waves was its made-for-TV origins and the rights of the broadcast partner. Can anyone out there clarify/elaborate?

I'd just assumed it was the same reason Disney didn't want Only Yesterday, When Marnie Was There, or From Up on Poppy Hill, either.

I'd like to know more about this, too. It was released in other countries like France and Germany (and Italy?) years ago, after all.

Rated PG-13 for "thematic elements". It's been a while since I've seen this movie, but I don't remember it being any worse than Only Yesterday.

FLCL: In this case, they're worried kids will imitate the behavior seen in the film.

Yeah, probably something like that. There is also some slight sexual themes, if I remember right. It's been a long while since I watched it, but I did like it and have the Japanese Blu-ray sitting here next to me. It is much more "anime" so-to-speak than most Ghibli fair, with teenage main characters who are mostly interested in high school romance and drama.

Anyway, cool this is getting a theatrical release. If I was going to have time and money for something like this in the next few weeks, I'd definitely go, unfortunately I wasn't able to make Spirited Away + Ghiblies, and I won't be able to see this either. I might buy the Blu-ray from them if it has anything interesting that the JP release doesn't have though.

Why is the US so late to the party on some of these Ghibli titles?
Some of the better ones, too, I might add.

I recall the original Ocean Waves book and episode of Animated Classics of Japanese Literature contains an attempted sexual assault?
