Kimi no na wa might as well be one of the most phenomenal achivement that an anime work could attained, and it received so in such a short time span too. Kudos to Makoto Shinkai for getting the reputation he deserved.

With such colossal box office earnings, Your Name has proven to be a showstopper! Smile I'm eagerly interested to hear of how high it scored in the U.S.!

The LAFCA previously awarded Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away with the Best Animated Film award in 2002, and the film went on to win the Best Animated Feature award in the Academy Awards in 2003

So you're telling me there's a chance?

Too bad if it ever was nominated for next year's academy awards, they won't let it break out of the animated category. I'm surprised they even put Toy Story 3 in the main contenders, doubt that will ever occur again.

My ardor for Shinkai's works may have cooled since having seen Children Who Chase Lost Voices but this is great news Shinkai has slowly made a name for himself grinding out movies that developed a cult following and even doing the opening video for the Ef: Fairy Tale of Two Visual Novel. This is well earned and deserved honestly when Voices of A Distant Star came out anyone would have thought this would happen.

Basically, any western publication that choose anything else hasn't seen this movie yet. They have 2 months.

Learned this off the Gold Derby site, but for the past ten years, the winner of this award has always garnered an Oscar nomination, so I hope that trend continues. At least the nominations, unlike the actual winners, are chosen mainly by people within the animation industry, which is why there tends to be somewhat diverse nominees.

My biggest concern was Funimation being able to get voters to actually see the film.

I'm starting to feel sorry for the guy. Imagine the pressure on him when he makes his next film!

Well, how he reacts to that pressure is what will really determine if he ends up a legendary filmmaker like Miyazaki.

If this is the start of a career in the international limelight for Shinkai, I can only wonder how his earlier films will come to be viewed amongst the critical circles beyond his original followers. Consider how The Castle of Cagliostro has come to receive far more exposure than other early Lupin works, something mainly attributable Miyazaki's later successes.

samuelp: He'll be ok, as long as he takes a break for a while. If he tries to jump in something right away, the expectations are gonna be too high.
