I doubt it'll pass Spirited Away, but it had a good run.

If this goes any higher on the list, I don't know what else to call this movie. It's already received such a legendary status, what else could it dethroned?

In a few months it could.

I hope this doesn't end up like the freaking GuP movie where they just keep extending it and extending it and extending it until its theater run becomes a useless comparison to anything else because it has been in theaters for over a year. I'm thrilled it's doing well, and I'm glad GuP did too, but at some point it starts to become eye rolling more than impressive.(Not that your name. is close to that yet, but if it's still in Japanese theaters in 3 months, it will be.)

Miyazaki films are falling like dominoes and I can barely contain myself!
In the name of critical diplomacy I should really remain silent, but life is too short!

lol no, did you look at its trajectory? It has slowed down too much (which is natural for 15th week). It won't come anywhere near Frozen, much less Spirited Away.

@relyat08

GuP did like 100 million yen in its last 5 months, it really stopped after a while, even if Kimi no Na wa stayed in the theaters for the whole year, I'm not sure it'd even top 25 billion.

[Edit]: removed unnecessary nested quotes. Please read the quoting guidelines. Errinundra.

I think it will reach Frozen.Kimi no Na wa increased by 400-500 million yen in one week only.

[Edit]: ditto. Errinundra.

Glad to see that In This Corner of This World is opening in more and more theaters. It's #2 on Eiga.com (see here), has a better rating than any movie in recent memory and continues to draw more people in. Someone posted an image on Twitter that shows how the movie has expanded from 63 to 180 theaters.

@Kaitonic,

It hasn't lost its momentum yet, but it's clearly slowing down steadily: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/intl/?page=&country=JP&wk=2016W48&id=_fYOURNAMEKIMINON01

You have to consider, however, that Frozen and the Ghibli movies are primary movies for families and children. your name., on the other hand, doesn't seem to be a movie to see with your 10-year old child, so it's an unprecedented success in its own way.

[Edit]: ditto again.

Princess Mononoke is also not a children's movie. Also none of Miyazaki's movies are "children's movies" in the Western understanding of the term (unlike Frozen).

But yes, Your Name has been an important movie because it's an auteur film that was not directed by Miyazaki, it shows that there are other animation directors in Japan with the capacity to produce films that are popular across the whole population.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, for example. That one grossed 20,3 billion yen, which isn't far at this point.

After that the next in line would be Frozen (25,5 billion), and topping that would be impossible.

If Your Name wins international prizes the Japanese public will do like they did in regards to Spirited Away and come to the theater for it in 2017 and then it will surpass Frozen and Titanic.

Adjusted for inflation? I hate how in the US at least, whenever they say something broke a record or whatever they never adjust for inflation so whenever I look it up they really hadn't done as great as media made it seem.

Why is it a useless comparison if people keep buying tickets? Which they did with the Girls und Panzer movie.
I would think that the distributor of any movie would want to keep it in theaters as long as people are paying to watch it.
