No one at all is interested in Little Witch Academia? I find that very surprising.

It's no way popular in Japan. Especially compared to the west.

How so? is there a reason why you thought it would be popular, I mean it was good(ish), but it wasn't really anything special. As for Japan, it's never had a commercial release until now, the first one was a training project that may have been seen, the second one was a English only kickstarter campaign that built a small devote fanbse in the west.

I'm not surprised Gintama is so high given that is apparently nearing the finale.

Well, i'm neither surprised that Gintama is topping the list nor that Rakugo isn't there at all (and those two are incidentally my most anticipated winter anime).

Gintama is so underappreciated... i can only assumed its because its so culture based that people just couldnt get into it.

So funny, probably the best anime I've seen.

I cant believe its about to end, i dont read the manga but I've been thinking about it. I hope the anime does a lot of the stories it skiped over over the years.

Well, it goes as expected that Gintama will be the top airing anime this season, followed by KONOSUBA, and I do expect it to be great.

LWA is one of my favorite movies ever, the both of them. Although I do understand it did not hit well-enough in Japan (not that they do need it, given it was funded with Kickstarter), I hope it does become popular in Japan with the TV Anime.

Don't worry v1cious you're not the only one looking forward to LWA. That's my third most anticipated after Gintama and Rakugo.

The second OVA had a physical release in Japan, which had a Japanese release and sold over 3k copies, which isn't bad, I don't know if that's what you mean by "commercial release", but the second wasn't accessible only to English fans, in any event.

This is certainly an interesting breakdown. Surprised to not see Rakugo on any list there either. I imagine Rakugo and LWA will be much more popular on the ANN poll.

Little Witch Academia is undoubtedly influenced by Mahou Shoujo-tai Arusu(Tweeny Witches)(or the creators have hella similar tastes...) and that wasn't exactly popular there back in the day either while being quite positively received over here. So tastes vary, and even after more than a decade they haven't changed much it seems...

yeah that would commercial, I hadn't heard anything about that though, i suppose that would make sense in retrospect. Rakugo is one I'm surprised at as well, I thought it was pretty popular with the ladies.

The fact that the most anticipated anime happens to be one that began a decade ago is perhaps indicative, I might posit, of the industry being spread somewhat thin at the moment.

^Well it is also one of the most popular anime during that window. Several of its iterations rank highly on English speaking sites and from the looks of it that opinion is shared with the Japanese fanbase as well. In my experience, these such polls tend to be dominated by sequels, particularly of popular series. I believe Haikyuu, Eupho and Natsume were the most anticipated this past season, and Nastume is at least as old as Gintama. And it is understandable that such a thing would occur. For sequels, you have an existing fanbase who of course highly anticipate new seasons and even outside of dedicated fans, since there has already been prior material, you know what you can reasonably expect, while with new stuff such anticipation is usually tempered by uncertainty of the unknown. And it isn't like the show in question has been out of the consciousness of the community long as the last season ended last winter.

Aw nuts, Seiren didn't make the list at all, that doesn't bode too well for its chances of finishing all six girls' arcs.

This is what pure ignorance looks like.
