At least all of the characters were at least 21, right? Also, it's too bad that YouTube's administrators couldn't simply make the video age restricted, since underage (under 21) viewers could still watch it. I get the logic in pulling the ad, but it's still a shame.

Unless you distinctly make a character look like they older than 30, I couldn't tell the difference between an estimated 25 YO anime character from one in there late teens depending on the art style.

Obviously the commercial is trying to make the product seem "young and hip" so you end up with a clash of concepts where in this case I would have to side with the child guardians trying to protect under age youths from the concept that "its socially acceptable to drink".

The characters are at least 21 years of age, so I don't see any problem with the beer ad that warranted its removal. Confused Perhaps the characters' younger-looking appearances may have caused someone to mistake them as teenagers and call for the ad to be wiped out...

In any case, here's hoping the fans' outcry will persuade Trigger to put the ad back up.

The commercial received negative comments on YouTube, so Kirin's Alcohol-Related Problems (ARP) division brought up the issue.

That's not what "triggered" really means, but I still laughed.

However, ASK claimed there was no effective age gate on the video, especially not on Facebook and news sites where it was posted and visual to minors. Even when they saw the age gate, users would need only click "yes" to claim they were over 20.

So what does ASK think of the tons and tons of printed ads for alcoholic drinks on billboards and in trains which are visible to people below 20?

According to the article, however, there is a ban on depiction of people younger than 25 drinking alcohol for TV commercials. As YouTube functions quite similarly to television (heck, it's named after television), I think it's understandable that whatever content rules and regulations that apply to normal television would apply to YouTube too.

Are they actually shown consuming alcohol though, rather than just holding onto cans or glasses? That might be the key difference.

He could not be shown smoking in the TV broadcast because he was 17. So basically you just have to say they're older.

So.... should youtube be abiding by the most restrictive rules in the world?
What should it be, 25, 21 or 20 or 18 or age 16--as is the case in several European countries? Or none at all, in the case of the most restrictive Islamic countries?

I think that was it.

The character designs and the settings in the commercial were no different than what we see in typical high-school anime set in the "real world". You could easily replace that can of Kirin Beer with a can of soda, fruit juice, or tea and it would've been exactly the same commercial - advertising a drink.

I bet if they revised their character models to look less like typical teenager anime characters, and changed the settings to reflect more of normal college-aged youth, then I honestly think it there wouldn't have been a problem.

Designs matter. That's why people still react to loli characters, even if it was explicitly mentioned in that character was an adult.

A Muslim country doesn't allowed a Muslim to drink alcohol, restrictive for sure but only for those that are part of the religion. They aren't responsible in trying to block this video for others, for sure. Anyway, yeah, I don't drink and I don't really care about a measley ad. But, I can understand if they are trying to prevent under age drinking.

This advert is harmful to society. It gives the false impression that the audience would have people to drink with.

This shouldn't even be age-restricted. Age-restriction on YouTube is for bare boobs, illegal drug use, death videos, etc, not adults of legal age drinking. Ridiculous.

ASK took the standpoint that web commercials should have the same standard as television

What standard is that? The girls in SHIROBAKO drink beer throughout the series, and they are younger than 25. Or does the "television" standard not apply to anime? The characters drink in both the animated and live-action versions of Nodame Cantabile, and some of them are probably under 21.

If you can legally drink at 21, then I don't see why characters on television and in advertising need to conform to a higher age standard.

If ASK wants to do something about alcoholism, why aren't they campaigning against after-hours office drinking parties which still seem pretty common in Japan?

The code of advertising says otherwise. https://www.cap.org.uk/Advice-Training-on-the-rules/Advice-Online-Database/Alcohol-Models-under-25.aspx#.WH-XvlrXerU

...

That should also apply to Hentai or ecchi but no creative contents(pornography or underage drinking) and media ads are 2 different things and cc does not violate the law( it depends on some countries like in Japan for ex).
