I really hope that this success doesn't give him anxiety and the feeling of inadequacy to make another box office hit like Your Name was. I just want him to keep doing what he is doing and not have the events of Your Name to affect him as a director and producer.

Wait. He has a deadline? Why the hell does he have a deadline? You can't give artistry a deadline. You can't say "you have until this time to write the next best thing" and expect him to just do it in a jif. The fudge? If that were the case we'd be seeing oscar worthy movies coming from Japan all the damn time. It's absurd. I was always under the impression that it was universal for these kinds of people to just write a draft when the time came or when they were hit with inspiration.

In the worst-case scenario, they may have asked him to do something relatively formulaic and straightforward to produce, just so that it can be swiftly brought about while his latest triumph is still fresh in the masses' memories.

Naturally, it would be woefully cynical for me to believe this is the actual reason for the deadline. If Shirobako has taught us anything, it is that directorial prowess is always secondary to the decrees of the higher-ups, even when arbitrary.

If someone is paying you to produce 'art' then yes you have deadlines.

Surprising he has a deadline given how much time there was between 5CM Per Second and Children Who Case Lost Voices, I assumed he just moved at his own pace when it came to developing his films,

Given its ample production time but 'interesting' end result, we can only hope that lessons were learned from the production of Children Who Chase Lost Voices. Whichever constraints there are that affect Shinkai's work, it would be right to assume they are not entirely temporal in nature.
