Story often seems too married to its game origins.

The anime's story is repurposing some elements of the game story, especially regarding Shuza and Yuuri's fall.

spoiler[In the game, the Black Knight/corrupted Yuri is a recurring enemy midgame, but you only find out his story later on. He comes from a parallel universe where Pheona and Pirika died, which twisted his heart. He came to the current universe to find a way to save them, joining this world's dark forces to do so. He also carries a Chronicle of his own, presumably taken from his world's Pheona.

Shuza is the most ruthless and ambitious of the 9 feudal lords that make up the Ogre world's 9 Territories, and believes it's his birthright to conquer and rule all Yggdra under him. Ingame, he's the villian once you reach the 9 Territories, since he wants to use the Chronicle's powers for his world domination plans. The Black Army threat and Alliance makes him put aside his ambitions for the moment, although he makes it clear it's only temporary and still believes himself the most superior being in the room. ]

Having never played the game, the only character I'm particularly invested in is Aram, so I was quite happy to see him step up the way he did here.

Yuri's development was pretty good too I felt and had an appropriate amount of tension and weight. Even if spoiler[the dark him he attacks turning out to be Pheona] was an extremely predictable development.

As for Pheona while it's true she hasn't explicitly done anything yet, her outbursts at least let me sympathize and connect with her more. She's much better than, say, that healer chick whom I hadn't even noticed was in the first movie (I assumed she joined with the other magicians at the end of the first movie but looked back and saw she was with Yuri's party the whole time).

I had no problems letting myself get swept up in events and I look forward to the 3rd movie.

I'll entirely give you that in terms of personality development Phoena is leagues ahead of most of the rest of the cast. However, in terms of actually contributing to the mission she's nearly worthless. All she does is carry the book around and occasionally use it and spoiler[by the end of this movie even that isn't true anymore]. If she was at least a team cheerleader, motive force, or clear love interest I'd be a little nicer on her. As is she's barely the team mascot, and her role even in that is in the process of being supplanted by the end of the first segment.

I don't disagree. She at least gets to be Ms Exposition for Aram, I guess?

I'm the kind of guy who'll "claim a waifu" in any show he watches, but none of the female characters in this left enough of an impression on me for that. Even design wise none of them have me heading over to Pixiv to find some fanart. This is due in large part to the inherent disadvantage of starting at the end of their journey and not being familiar with the games. We miss out on all the development up to that point and don't even get proper introductions. I have yet to watch the OVA so perhaps that'll rectify things a bit.

As it stands the closest thing I have to a waifu is Aram. But after this movie Pheona is at least at the starting line.
