Aaaaand with this Yuri on Ice V1 has reached 70K. I'm also very pleased to see it hold on to the ranking after seven weeks. I really thought they'd confirm S2 on the all-night screening, but I guess we'll have to wait for the other event in April *sigh*. Now crossing my fingers that volume 3 won't have a much more significant drop

Okay I'm still iffy on how overseas exports of Blu Rays affect sales BUT CDJapan just emailed me that anime under Avex Pictures will not allow Yuri!!! on Ice to be exported overseas as of Feb 15th (only people who pre ordered previously will get their copies). Here's a link for volume 3 as an example: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/EYXA-11239

It doesn't explain why but, this completely sucks because I only have vol. 1 and was waiting to buy the other volumes when I got my fiances together. Now I HAVE to wait for Funimation to confirm their home liscense. ;w;

I dropped YOI! because of the BL stuff (such is not my thing). So, with these astounding sales, is it likely that is a primary reason why it has sold so well? I know there was also the ice skating and real life skaters guest starring that also were a factor.

People like it because:
1. It's a sports series but with grownups instead of highschoolers, which means the competitions can be on a worldwide level not just between highschool teams. That's a plus for the people tired of highschool shows and gives the show higher stakes.

2. It has some absolutely beautifully animated iceskating so it was embraced by the sakuga crowd.

3. It's just as much about the sport as it was about the gay romance. The director is a huge iceskating fan and boy, you can tell. That way it captures both the sports audience and the BL fans.

To conclude, it's not just popular bc of yaoi stuff.

If BL was the reason YoI sold, actual BL like Super Lovers would be doing incredible sales wise and they aren't. People are pretty shallow and dumb though so when a series that doesn't pander to their demographic becomes popular they'll use any excuse to dismiss it like "its only popular because yaoi".

I noticed that other Avex titles included One Piece and Ass Class which Funimation has on U.S home release so, I am praying that means eventually they'll announce the liscene. But, I might bite the bullet and dip into my Anime Expo savings since I love the choregoraphy extras and bonus art by Kubo sensei. Seriously, Avex or whomever should release some explaination for this esp. since YOI has reached mainstream levels of popularity; why cut out foriegn fans like this? Crying or Very sad

It's a good show, with great animation but the biggest reason is how female otaku are starting to become one of the biggest, if not the biggest already, buyers of anime BD's
"Uta-Pri Legend" sales are showing that. Also you can see the great increase of shows for female otaku for that season.
Having BL or not is not the main reason.

From years male otaku shows dominate the charts but now we are seeing the start of female otaku dominance.
There are great numbers of single Japanese woman that have a good income and can afford to buy these BDs and many of them are closet otakus.
Anime producers are going for this market very fast and reduce the dependence on male otaku.

No, it sold well because it's legitimately good, and it's not really BL. There's a (heavily) implied romance between the two leads, but it's NEVER the main focus; and there's still people here debating whether they are a couple or just friends.

It's a sport anime at first, and a comedy as second. It's not marketed as a BL because it's not. It's pretty much an usual sport anime where the main character just happens to date another guy, huh.

Yuri on Ice is a good show, period. It has strong, interesting, likable characters, a decent, if slightly unoriginal plot about an athlete making a comeback, beautiful ice skating and a great sense of humor--it knows not to take itself too seriously. But it is undeniably also a gay romance spoiler[lack of clear, onscreen love confession not withstanding]. I rarely watch shows or movies in which romance is the *only* plot element to speak of, and I'm not a fan of most sports or sports fiction, although I love figure skating, so I don't think I would have stuck with YoI if it were about any other sport. For example, I liked Free, which had less outright romance, but otherwise was very similar, and yet I didn't finish the second season. It was fun and all, but it was still mostly about swimming. If you enjoyed the sports plot, animation quality and humor in Free, despite all the obvious relationship drama between the boys, you'll probably enjoy YoI despite the romance between Yuri and Victor.

Hmm I always assumed YOI was BL but based on your comments sounds more like a romance/sports drama. If only it wasn't about ice skating...

#1 LL! Sunshine, #2 Yuri On Ice, and #3 Utapri domination.
I have to agree that these 3 are making the BRD and DVD charts more lively compared to previous charts. I just read the article about the Avex Ban it was so sadenning, I wonder how it'll affect the future sales of YOI? I wont be surprise if it dropped hard.
