Back when I read this volume last year, I have to admit Elias's backstory was very intriguing. And even with it told, there's a lot we still don't know about this proverbial beast, while on the other hand we have a very fair idea of the beauty's story at this point (of course, I recently finished volume 6, so I can make that statement about how much I know about Chise at this stage). Elias is a pretty mysterious being, and I think that's a natural part of his charm in many ways.

I think the really interesting part was when spoiler[Elias actually got upset with Chise for bringing up his past in the final pages of this volume, after asking about looking tasty to him when they were lying together in bed in volume 3; it was surprising to actually see him genuinely get mad at his precious apprentice].

I read it as more fear than anger. spoiler[Fear of her knowing about his own known past would have made her more fearful and revolted towards him which could cause her to increase her already resentment of her continued existance. In short, more suicidal, Thankfully her true reaction took him by surprise more so than her's at being told of his past history with Lindel. ] Elias is a ancient mage, but emotionally and empatically he's just a young puppy who needs to be trained not to chew on the furnature.

The way he spoiler[loomed over Chise] didn't give me the impression he was afraid at first glance though.

I don't really like the fact that everyone likens Elias to a child just because he's never experienced or never had the need to feel emotions. It's a strange way to characterize a mage who's been around a very long time.
