It's a shame they never really could flesh out all the ideas, because there are some good ones.
Also it gave rise to Crossbone Gundam. The best Gundam series you will likely never see. |

Thank goodness for SRW! BTW, Eternal Wind ~ Hohoemi wa Hikaru Kaze no Naka will always be tied with Mizu no Hoshi e Ai wo Komete for my favorite anisong. I was literally blown away the first time I heard it (heh heh you see what I did there?) ;p |

I tried to watch this once, but I didn't understand it and gave up very early on. I assumed my confusion was due to me not seeing all the previous Gundam shows.
Hearing about the ESB knockoff soundtrack makes me want to check it out again, though. "Homages" to American media was one of the things I loved about 20th century anime. |

I haven't seen F91 in years. Nobody would deny the plot was too rushed and compressed to work in such a limited running time, but I do distinctly remember liking some scenes in isolation even as several of the others just totally confused me.
Among certain Gundam fan circles, the joke is that everyone talks about the Crossbone Gundam manga being an awesome story that should be animated...until they actually read the manga and realize it's not that spectacular after all. The titular mobile suit designs are still great though! |

not sure whats so confusing about F91, its just a fast paced movie. its to be expected that some characters don't get fully explored but its not that crazy.

Although I can't really disagree that the movie is fast paced to the point of coming off as disjointed (and I can't say this review is at all wrong, frankly), it can be pretty annoying how all conversations about it seem to begin and end with "hey it was supposed to be series, but it wasn't, and it's really fast paced trying to do a lot at once, so it failed, let's never talk about it again". ...might as well dump my comment from the Shelf Life review here while I'm at it. There is Stuff There, is what I'm getting at.

I've never found it confusing. Rushed yes but confusing no. It's far from an unloved stepchild to me. It's my spoiled only child. lol I love F91 and I would love to see it complete. I have no doubt personally if it was it'd be the greatest Gundam series.

F-91 isn't the unloved stepchild. It just isn't the first born son either. F-91 may not get held up as a beacon for how to make a gundam, but it isn't fenced off with warning signs saying 'beware: steaming pile of shit ahead' with a disclaimer that said pile is no longer to be considered canon. |

D seems a bit savage, I'd give it a C+ for story, it at least tries to make something of its runtime. Seabook is just a lesser Amuro, Cecily's motivations seem to change in some confusing ways, Iron Mask is pretty underdeveloped, etc but I don't think it's that bad. The pacing I find actually gets too SLOW after the first 20 minutes, I'd mentioned in the Where to Start Watching column that I liked the opening raid and how everyone had to shift their mentalities at the drop of a hat in order to survive, it is a fantastic Gundam opener, but then the rest is a bit of murky politics and stuff done better in some earlier entries, but perhaps in fact the heavily reduced scope ruined its chance to come into its own more.
I still personally can't get behind the logic that F91 and Victory need to have more blatant ties to earlier UC stuff, they are decades apart from CCA, Unicorn, and even each other, the only thing you really need to take away is that all the previous stuff eventually lead to this. Meanwhile Zeta was meant as a more proper sequel to classic Gundam but it doesn't explain some of its political changes too well, even with 0083 which still helps a lot and is a fave of mine. |
