I hope more agencies speak up about this serious issue concerning harassment of voice actors and idols, they are humans like the fans are and should be treated as such.

Anime director and Ordet animation studio founder Yutaka Yamamoto also commented on the incident on Tuesday. While he agreed with the widespread condemnation of the attacker, he also believes Tomita made a mistake.

"For people who work as idols (and similar professions), carelessly blocking a fan is a bad idea," Yamamoto said. "And you can't help how it looks when you return a present." He went on to say that he takes an attitude where he is ready to fight back at any time. He thinks Tomita was at a higher risk because she was unprepared.

Way to victim blame Mr. Yamamoto. Had she KEPT said gift, then the loon would think he owned her, resulting in the same thing happening. His "Ready to fight back at any time" is easy to say until someone stabs you in the f-in neck. I don't care if she slapped him in the face and called him a pervert, (or worse) her being stabbed is NOT her fault!

As long as you dont change your mentality about Idols and all that nonsense, People will get stapped, slapped and hated left and right if they show they have a life of their own.

Phew that was hard to write with the rage I've been feeling reading such a ridiculous request.

I'm more inclined to think this is that apologizing thing in Japan where both parties are expected to apologize, regardless of how much or little blame is laid on either party. Still, while I get that idol/performance industries are cutthroat and you need every fan you can get, if the choice comes down to "accept a gift" (and given how forgiving VAs are towards fans, I'm inclined to think this gift was also inappropriate) or "carry mace", something has gone really, really wrong.

Very refreshingly awesome to see 81Produce looking out for their seiyuu. Smile Here's hoping more will follow.

This will dissuade fans that actually have a thought in there head, but it wont stop the fringe extreme.

From what I've read it was a watch, and probably not a cheap Casio.

Japan Times wrote:
Someone, apparently Iwazaki, sent multiple messages to Tomita’s Twitter account and claimed to have sent a watch to her sometime between January and February. It was apparently returned to the sender in April.

Since the end of April, the same person sent about 20 messages over 10 days to the actress who performed on the same stage with Tomita, asking her to tell the victim to return all the gifts he had sent.

It's very easy to tell someone not to do anything, but there are those who are going to do it anyway when they're told not to.

This isn't enough there must be more steps taken to protect idols from would be attackers because something similar to this incident is very likely to happen again in the near future. Neutral

Do you really think Japanese style idols are the only kind of celebrity that can be harassed by following them around and taking pictures? I'd almost say it's a very Japanese thing to ask for that much privacy for people they market so publicly these days, Americans would never expect people to be that polite and just security up.

The people posing as fans using this as a chance to attack someone for kicks aren't fans.

Also I should add there are many kinds of idols, thinking the 'pure and kiddie' idols are the only kind is incorrect, so blaming idol culture as a whole becomes counterproductive as a bunch of normal stable fans are being lumped in with other types.

I also commend the user that mentioned that this is likely due in part to the tradition that both sides apologize even if there is a clear wrongdoer. Even when you are the party attacked, It shows that you understand why the other party has grown upset, deflating any later angst that could arise. Valuing the cohesion of society as a whole over personal issues.

I did read as 81 producers ask.... that would've been better. But that? "Please, do not stalk voice actress, you make a big fuss for all of us". Confused

Also Yutaka Yamamoto's comment is absolute bullsh*t. "Oh, of course, you piss a fan (bad boy!) and you get punished (bad girl!)".

Well said, captokita! Victim-shaming is inexcusable. I applaud the studio for asking for fan restraint and understanding for the voice actors. Yamamoto's comments are toxic and as you pointed out, could unintentionally make a situation WORSE by having the VA "pander" to the obsessed fan. I've read and seen too many times, here in the US, a woman rejecting the advances of a man only for the man to turn violent.
