It's really sad that a majority of the cases deal with elementary and middle schoolers. I understand that everyone has their own rules as to what their children can watch, which is becoming increasingly harder now that many kids have access to the internet on tablets, phones, and game consoles, but Death Note is clearly not a show for young children.
In my humble opinion, if a parent wants to let their children watch something that may not have been created for children, at least explain to children what your standards are and what is not okay in your household (I understand everyone has different rules) and in this case, that it is not okay to create a "death note" whether in playing or not. I love that anime is becoming something more common in America and known not just as little kid cartoons or dirty shows (although there are some out there that fit this description), but some people will always think that anime is nothing more than that and will use any kind of story like this to continue to try to make anime into something that it's not. Anyway, totally not trying to blame anybody (parents, children, or school systems) in this post, because let's be real, the kids could have just been playing, the parents may not have known that their children were watching the show, or the school systems may have blown it a little out of proportion. I don't know all the facts, just giving my opinion.

Clearly kids didn't understand from watching the show the importance of Light keeping his actions with the Death Note secret.

The kid was a little shit harassing the girl, but he never specifically said he got the death list idea from Death Note, only "a television show." So until the article gets updated it could be from any series.

What people in the US have to learn about cases like these is not that "anime is evil" or crap like that, but the fact that kids doing stuff like that is a direct reflection of their own culture.
Doesn't matter if it's a "Death Note", a magic wand, plastic guns or whatever, the toy doesn't matter, what is disturbing is the fact that kids at young ages seemingly have no concept on the value of life and are already thinking of taking other peoples' lives for their own selfish reasons. Instead of looking into baning works of fiction, these parents and schools should be looking at what they are doing that made a kid think like that. Not to bring a different discussion to the table, but this is the problem I have with gun culture and the right to bear arms. It's not that I don't understand that guns don't kill people, people kill people, the second ammendment, and all the defense. It's because I don't trust US culture to handle guns well enough. This morbid interest in gloryfying a tool that has the sole purpose to be a display of power and to kill others. |

So, my local newspaper has a column every week called "Car vs House", where they list all the instances in the past week of cars crashing into buildings locally. Scary that it happens often enough here to warrant a column but...
Point being, we see these headlines so frequently ANN should just have a periodic "Kid writes classmate's name in 'Death Note'" column. Though it probably would have been a lot bigger ~10 years ago. |

And situations like this are why Viz eered on the side of caution and gave the manga a 16+ rating. In terms of visuals it's tame, but thematically a lot of the Naruto crowd can't handle it.
But what good did it really do? Parents just completely ignore rating systems, it seems. Everyone has been so ridiculously careful about this series - to the point where some random edits were made in the Canadian broadcast despite airing late at night. At some point, parents have to take responsibility. Death Note is not for elementary schoolers. |

Sorry, but this shows a lack of understanding in how humans develop. No, children don't think about the consequences of their actions - this is not new and it is not at all linked to 'gun culture'. Children say mean, hateful things because they don't feel the ramifications, kids can be complete not-so-nice-people because saying something and doing something are two very different things for them. You are scare mongering in the extreme, using it to push your own agenda in a pretty disgusting way. |

People of all ages have been doing this for centuries in one way or another. It seems the death note method is the latest version. There's also drawing a picture of someone and setting it on fire, imagining a baseball is somebody's face, or making a voodoo doll and sticking pins all over it. One way or another, the action is just an indicator that the person performing it is under stress and is directing it at a particular person or their proxy - or that is how I see it anyway. This particular case also includes direct harassment, which is terrible. Is there a difference though between writing someone's name in a secret, make-believe death note and secretly doing the other things I mentioned? (Just food for thought.) I'm just happy that I never held anyone in such contempt that I felt the need to do something like that.

I gave up a long time ago on parents paying attention to what their kids watch and most of all, teaching them that what they see in anime isn't real. As a teacher, this is frustrating as heck.

Actually i heard somewhere else it was based off of the list that pro wrestler chris jericho had been doing on RAW. but either way kids shouldn't be doing stuff like that and parents should pay attention to what their kids are getting into. |
