Well, also, the movie actively talks down to the audience and ScarJo, while likable, comes off as a wide-eyed little girl stumbling through Oz or Wonderland, instead of a confident veteran with a wide array of skills. That, too, didn't help. But as a curiosity, it was at least worth watching, even if it failed to meet its potential.

Needed more Beat Takeshi. Even sitting behind a desk he shined.

There are probably plenty of people that didn't like it because of the white washing stuff but all the reviews I've watched and read simple stated that the movie was bland and kinda boring , hell half of them didn't even bring up it up.

This was just hilarious to me.

Paramount domestic distribution chief Kyle Davies told CBC News this week that he believes "[s]the conversation regarding casting impacted the reviews[/s]" for Dreamworks and Paramount's Ghost in the Shell film. "We had hopes for better results domestically," he said.

"the conversation regarding a poorly conceived movie"

Let me fix that for you

Quote:
He continued, "You've got a movie that is very important to the fanboys since it's based on a Japanese anime movie. So you're always trying to thread that needle between honoring the source material and make a movie for a mass audience. That's challenging, but clearly the reviews didn't help."

So, maybe the answer is strop re-appropriate another countries franchise. No one ever thinks, "Hey, here's a lark, let's try to take something obscure from Japan and see if we can make it America mainstream.", and then is amazed when it fails. "Oops, we weren't quite PC enough with this one, my bad" But, hey, we can all just blame "fanboys" for not promoting our garbage.

Seriously is it so hard to be creative and original anymore? Maybe the reason why anime and Japanese films have become popular with western audiences is because the west movies have become crap!

I have yet to see the live action Ghost in The Shell. I have both anime movies on disc and also saw "Innocence" at a local cinema.

The Japanese live action movie that I'd like to see at least at a Japanese film festival with subtitles as I saw it in Japan without subtitles is the historical drama "The Emperor in August".

For live action adaptation of a manga, Thermae Romae and its sequel worked well.

Yeah, it could have been the controversity.
Or it could have been the terrible script and the lack of anything Gits related execpt names and some visuals.

This was NOT the Major. Not by a long shot.

That's a Marvel tier excuse right there.

Whitewashing despite Social media slactavists love obsession with with it is just a small part of the failure pie. Because those who complained about it were never gonna watch it anyway.

Can Hollywood just accept that anime just isn't mainstream enough to get the casual audience in the seats. You could make all the Akiras/EVAs/DBZs/Sailor Moons/Naruto you want with all the A listers and you still won't touch a 3DCG comedy movie about a baby.

Sure it didn't receive great reviews BUT I don't think that's why it flopped, people often times boo and hate on critics and they go see movies just to try showing them that they're WRONG. Yup critics opinions are some how "factually" Wrong. A good example is Suicide Squad, the movie received pretty awful reviews and it made tons of money.

I think the reason why it flopped is because who was it made for? I don't personally know any Ghost In The Shell fans that asked for the movie or wanted it, I don't know if very many fans in general did but I kind of doubt it. Then anime has a huge stigma in the West in general still. Finally you combine all those things with this movie opening against the next big western animated kids movie? Ya your movie is going to flop sorry to say.

Ya there's nothing in this adaptation that feels like the Major at all, it's almost night and day honestly.

Well, it's obvious people didn't go see it because of the white washing thing. But the poor reviews is because the movie was just a bland and uninteresting revenge action film with a GITS skin.

It wasn't as terrible as people make it out to be, at least not on Dragonball levels of bad. It was just... forgettable. Which for anime live action... is actually pretty good lol.

They're talking about the live action films, not the anime series.

Not that I'm complaining, but since everyone seems to have issues with the Ghost in the Shell movie, maybe it would've been best for them to just make a movie inspired by Ghost in the Shell. Confused

and aot, kenshin, and deaht ntoe all kept the spirit of what theywere based on, and in the case of death note you can argue that it is better than the source material even if just because it stripped it off the unecesary second half that the authors themselves admit they had not even planned nor wished to happen.

can't talk about the other ones becasue I have not watched them.

Oh, this was a bad month to release it in for sure which seems to have gone over the studio's heads. There's Boss Baby being a success so far, but of course it's not surprising Beauty and the Beast, Logan, and Kong did super well and are still getting some people in seats this past weekend, Power Rangers isn't getting a ton of viewers but still a decent amount, and even Get Out is still (deservedly) doing pretty good. It seems like the movie release schedule is just getting heavier and inevitably some films just are going to not get enough attention. I mean, Star Trek Beyond underperformed last year and that was a well-received film by critics.
