It certainly doesn't help that the baddies have some truly ridiculous names, including gems like Sladder Honeysuckle and Prizewell City Slicker.

When it comes to truly ridiculous Kazuma Kamachi character names, in my opinion nothing tops Stephanie Gorgeouspalace from Index.

I like the ridiculous names. I got a good laugh out of Prizewell City Slicker.

Between the glory of these ones and Baccano's Jacuzzi Splott and Nice Hollystone I've often thought that maybe some Japanese writers think that English names work the same way as Japanese names. Pretty much all Japanese names are actual words in the language with definitions beyond being just names and maybe some Japanese just don't know that it just doesn't work that way in all other languages.

it does work like that in other languages, but it has been obscured to a point of no recognition. like this name comes from that other name in that other language which also comes form another name that comes from latin/barbaric language which means this.

Yes but not to the same degree that it is in Japanese where the majority of them are still words in common usage. Most biblical names had a meaning in Hebrew but never had an English meaning beyond their use as names. Even with words having meanings there are still set names you don't just pick any words that sound interesting, in Japanese it seems like it's a lot more of a free-for-all.

Kamachi and Narita have been doing this for like 15 years, I'm certain they know names don't work like that.

They're just supposed to be fun names.

its ashame that this series didn't get enough fanbase considering that it have a well liked cast and both male characters especially quenther arent complete oblivious girl phobic dumbasses unlike say kazuma's other works, including index/railgun's touma kamajo. you will never see that idiot crying about not being able to see an idol's boob size (his expression on ohhoho's true identity was definitely an lol moment and proof he's no touma. especially when he says "what happened to the g cups?"), have hidden stash of hentai magazines and definitely will never grope any female titties to death.

this series definitely needs to get its own manga or at least a second season. it was more or less a breath of fresh air kazuma gave us from the massive harem fanservice fest that is the index series.
