According to the police investigation, the two then received a payment of 11 million yen (about US$100,000) for a license to those rights. The Tokyo police arrested the father and son in March.

That's rather Bad of them. This would have set a Dangerous precedent if they hadn't been caught. People who attempt Off The Wall schemes such as this often think themselves to be Invincible these days...

Zin: I agree. If they're that terrible at being smooth criminals, then they should just beat it. Wink

I'd watch an anime starring Michael Jackson.

Anyone remember this?

So, with that link about Jacko having anime bits in "Scream", was this the first professional AMV? That he had the deep pockets against many copyright suits certainly carries such an argument?

If I correctly recall, Michael Jackson was also featured in Space Channel 5 as "Space Michael", making him one of the first, if not the first, legendary singers to be featured in a gaming title.

A bit late for such an anime, a Michael Jackson anime should've been done in the early to mid 2000's.

I was about to bring that up too. Him being in Space Channel 5 dancing alongside Ulala and the others seemed so natural the first time I saw it, and it's still worth seeing it again to this day.

As seen in the very Scream music video, Jackson itself was a real life anime character. (To be fair, this was not mostly his choice as his extreme paleness that required the use of K-Pop-style make up -- well, actually, K-Pop's make up is MJ's style, but whatever -- came from his immune system killing melanin-producing cells due to vitiligo illness.)

Theoretically, MJ's estate can license the rights of his image to an anime production company, but for this to make sense there should be some outstanding idea for a project, not something average. So the possibility of this to ever happen is not high at all.

But as the article pointed out the charges have been dropped against them meaning they've gotten away with it. Though the article doesn't go into much detail about why the charges were dropped.

It could presumably be due to insufficient evidence.

Corporate fraud and defamation give me the cry alones.

Insufficient evidence still makes for one of the strangest cases of white collar crrimes I have ever heard of. The level of deception, derisive philanthropy, and ridiculous premise would make a far better anime. What would a pitch for a Michael Jackson anime be like? What would they focus on? His childhood? His music? Subsequent depression? Accusations of pedophilia? Neverland Ranch? WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THIS?

I'm not a fan of his music, but this seems like a tasteless thing to do to someone who died and has fans who still honor his legacy. Being an anime fan does not make me an expert on this escapade, his life or music, but damn. $100, 000 for a quick cash grab. Very lame. Neutral
