I still don´t quite understand how the sequel justified getting made, with such a tight profit margin, but i suspect that Tom Cruise greased a few wheels. Good on him. A shame that the similarly positioned Mad Max 4 may liked lead nowhere.

Surprised and delighted to hear the sequel is getting made. The first movie was WAY better than it had any right to be.

And proof of that is my loathing for Tom Cruise, but after my brother went to see this movie twice, I knew I had to go see it. I was surprised by how good the movie was.

Agree with the other comments here, was surprised how much I enjoyed Edge of Tomorrow.
If I remember correctly though, it seemed to wrap itself up pretty nicely, a sequel doesn't seem to make sense.
I guess as long as someone thinks there's money to be made, that's enough of a reason to push on.

^^ I'm with you. While I haven't read the novel, I though EofT adapted it completely. Also surprised about a sequel because I thought it wasn't that popular or had good revenue. I hope they don't pull something lame like "the alien queen had a sister..."

I loved this movie, but I really don't think it needs a sequel. Sure, more aliens can always come, but what made the movie was how they did the reset mechanic. Is Tom just going to all too conveniently get sprayed with commander blood again? There is also how they're going to do it without just ripping off the first one.

$360 million in the box office world wide which is over double the movie's budget.

Complete stories don't need sequels though, I don't care how well the original was received.

The novel spoiler[doesn't go nearly as far as the movie does. It ends with the main character killing the previous looper and no real sign of the war ending soon]

It wasn't really a complete story, maybe a story arc. As with Independence Day, the humans only won the battle, they didn't finish the war.

Like in the movies, when you kill the villain or creature. You better see the dead body, you better put a few more holes into in. Then chop it up, cremate it, and then mail the ashes to 100 different faraway locations and then have the locals bury it.

So the story for Edge of Tomorrow is not finished.

Also, sooner or later, the Strike Witches bunch need to plug up that Neuroi highway, too.

Besides, we're talking about a series with what is basically time travel. So nothing is ever finished. The past is never safe.

I loved the first movie but had heard the reception wasn't as good as they expected so I'm thrilled to hear a sequel's in the works. Though I wonder exactly how they'll do the plot. We'll, at least turning that tag line into a title implies there will still be time looping, which was my favorite part of the first one so I'll definitely watch another.

Tom Cruise is one of the popular actors to hate on, but I love him as an actor. All his stuff is must watch for me. The movies he's in might not always be good, but it's never because of him. He's always good.

The sequel's title calls back to the first film's "Live. Die. Repeat" tagline, which had more prominence than the film's actual title in some promotional materials and the home video release.

Yep: The first film did horribly in US theaters (the combination of the obscure title, and the fact that nobody likes Cruise outside of Mission:Impossible and we wish he'd just go away, preferably in a straitjacket), and Warner, being Warner...blamed the title. Confused

Although the title was getting the bad "soap-opera" jokes ("Will Cruise resolve his love for the aliens, and...what about Naomi? Tune in for the continuing drama of 'Edge of Tomorrow'"), so when Warner was doing marketing surveys for how to package the disk, one question they did ask was "Would you have preferred 'Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow' as a title?"
I'm guessing a majority said yes. I know I did.

So they took a book with an awesome title (all you need is kill) and made it much worse (edge of tomorrow) and then they make a sequel and pick a terrible title again. What about just "live, die, live" so much better.

Liman stated that the film would "revolutionize how people make sequels", and went on to say that the story is "much better than the original film" and that it's "a sequel that's a prequel"

Well judging from that quote it could be interesting.

While its $178 million budget was a lot bigger than the $100,206,256 it made domestically, the global box office was $370,541,256. So far, that is the biggest anime/manga-based movie.

Franchise wise, the biggest is "Transformers" which, so far, had a collective $1.105 billion budget but made $3,773,861,624 globally. One reason accounting for this movie franchise being so successful is that perhaps most of the overall franchise's success is from the toys.
