This is true at least until Miramaxe gets their slimy paws on it. Anyway, it's fun, if you didn't mind Cool as Ice.

Wow, this news report got up rather quickly (I just told tempest about it five minutes ago). For those who haven't picked it up yet, the Tai Seng R1 DVD release contains two discs. Disc 1 is the movie with Cantonese or Mandarin dialogue with Chinese (traditional or simplified) or English subtitles. Disc 2 has the bonus features with no available English subtitles. You also get collectible bookmarks of Jay Chou, Edison Chen, Shawn Yue and Jordan Chan.

Just a slight correction to what's been reported, Tai Seng's release actually just an import of the HK R0 version, with a Tai Seng sticker on it, and not a proper R1 version. They've been doing this more frequently these days. It's not licensed in the traditional way, but at the same time, they are the legal distributors of it until someone actually does license it.

Is it a bootleg or not? Official region 1 or not? YesAsia says that the DVD is Region 1.

I'd like to pick it up, but as with my Hikaru no Go bootlegs, I need to hold the thing in my hand to know if it's a boot. Well, if Best Buy carries it, it's a legit release. Or...it could be that bootleggers are getting too good at what they do. I have a HnG BL with Japanese/Mandarin audio, Chinese and Engrish subs, and HnG stickers. My friend has Region two bootlegs. Is there a place I can look at picture? YesAsia's picture looked fuzzy, and slightly suspicious. But this is all coming from someone's who's bootleg paranoid.

Tai Seng sells legal copies of movies. They just don't sell decent copies of them.

As Gatsu said, Tai Seng doesn't bootleg.

Also, Yes Asia doesn't carry bootlegs.

i have the hong kong edition of the dvd, it is a certified region 3 DVD. what i've heard is, Megastar did Tai Seng a favor and made a batch of Region 1 discs for distribution to the chinese communities in North America.

which might explain why there were no english subs on the bonus features.

They are able to put English Subtitle on the DVD because HK was once part of Britain (before it was hand back to china), thus they are catering to the English speaking community in HK. The HK disc are believe to be Region Zero (even if they are stated R1) and they are distrube not only to the US and Canada, but to Austraila, the UK and other parts of the world. Some will even have subtitle in Thai, Korean, Vietnamese, and other languages as well.

They are not bootleg, they are just produce the same way as many anime bootleg in term of cheap packing and menu. There is still 5.1 sound, 2 Chinese language track: Can and Man, and like 3 or 4 different subtitle.

The R3 are really for the mainland china. Also you will notice that English subtitle are of British's language context instead of Americans. Words like Mum or Colour instead of Color.
