The PS3 was a bad and good life lesson for Sony. Kaz is probably celebrating the end of the CELL right now.

And when Sony decides something is "retired", they immediately assume it's vanished off the face of the earth overnight, no one owns one anymore because they all rushed out and early-bought the replacement on Day One, so why bother to even update the past customers?
Case in point, last summer, Sony and Samsung "decided" that 3DTV was finally "dead" immediately stopped making sets, and as a result, no new 3D digital movies were offered on PS3's Playstation Store, and 3D downloads are no longer even an option on PS4. (Apart from the VR programs, and Blu3D support that was around in its programming from earlier.)

I was a loyal PS3 user from the '08 days when they were (literally) the only Blu-ray player that worked, and stayed around to watch Netflix's PS3 app change the TV industry singlehandedly.
As you can probably guess, I was not one of the core-gamers who said "The PS3 flopped because they tried to make it a streaming media/disk player, and didn't give us the cool GRAPHICS and ONLINE PLAY we wanted!", and rushed to get the new bells-and-whistles upgrade the minute it was pre-ordering.
But, when Japan announced PS3's retirement, I knew when Sony US would soon be knocking on the door... Crying or Very sad

I started playing Final Fantasy XIV on my PS3 the other night because it is free on that platform until June 15th. Reminded me why I thought that game was pretty boring.

I've resisted buying a PS4 which won't play any of my collection of PS1/2/3 games. I've owned a couple of "fat" PS3's which included the same chip as the PS2 alongside the Cell processor for backwards compatibility. Now Sony cares not a whit about that as far as I can tell as the "slim" PS3 I now own has no compatibility. Doesn't overheat and die like my two fats did though!

My biggest complaint with my PS3 has nothing to do with games. I'm a Playstation Vue subscriber, and when watching shows on the PS3 it has a tendency to lock up and require that you power-cycle the device. That means waiting while it checks the filesystem for consistency the next time it boots. The freezes occur mostly when I'm trying to skip forward or backward within a program. I guess if I were a docile little sheep I'd just watch the commercials, but at 67 I have little interest in 99+% of the products advertised on TV.

These problems don't arise when I watch Vue on an Android device (with Chromecast), but the on-screen controls on Android are extremely limited and, again, only good if you don't care about avoiding commercials.

(Ie. because the FF franchise games have become so wrapped up in their own non-linear stories and complex real-time macros, you just set it up to watch it play itself, unlike the real turn-based strategy challenge that died with X/X-2 when the later titles went to PS3?)

On PS3, I discovered that a wealth of essential PS1 (FFVII!) and PS2 (Okami! Persona 3!) games were upgraded to PS3 emulation on PS Network soft digital-downloads, and thus had no qualms whatsoever about finally giving up my loyal old back-comp. "fat" '08 PS3 model--the second incarnation, the one that didn't need a cooling fan or go into overdrive when playing Blu-ray disks--when it finally died after eight years and needed a new-generation PS3 Slim replacement.
(Yes, eight years--That was something we rubbed in X-Box fans' faces during the Blu-vs-HDDVD Wars. Razz )

I'd held off on PS4 forever because "B-but...what about my Miku Project Diva F disks? And I'd just bought the Kingdom Hearts upgrades! And my ultra-rare Valkyria Chronicles PS3 disk, that mysteriously seemed to have vanished off the face of Gamestop overnight!"
But, with the obvious above-mentioned Sony worries, I finally upgraded to PS4 Slim*, and, like the others, discovered that all my PS3 classics had been upgraded to PS4 disk, and even Valkyria was still available as a soft digital "remaster" on the PS4 Store.
I don't ask for much, but if change is forced upon me by Sony, the burden is on them to compensate. Mad

----
* - I'd ask "Why did they even bother making the PS Pro, if it doesn't have native 4K UHD disk-compatibility to help sell the new home-theater format like the last two did?", but there is an in-house Sony reason at the moment, and it's not doing the new format any favors.

The backwards compatibility of the original ps3s was a big part of the reasons they broke in addition to having increased the cost. I don't really think there is much of a point right now anyway. PS2 games look pretty horrid on an HD tv, but most pcs can run a PS2 emulator and enhance them a bit.

I was amused to see this article now though because in a month I'm going to box up my PS3 and stick it in storage with my other old consoles.

I consider that a better tradeoff: my 'fat' model has been nothing more than a cumbersome paperweight for the majority of the time I have owned it. A slim model alongside an actual PS2 would be a more economical solution over time, one would imagine.

PS3 was great. It met all my home entertainment needs in one divice, not just the gaming. The PS4 on the other hand, I have yet to buy because without the 4K blu-ray player, it's gonna be missing something. And while I am considering going digital, there are still shows and movies I'd prefer to have physical copies of because they likely are not available digitally due to age and ambiguity.

It had a good run, 11 years. The PS3 was great, it was literally the only box you needed to do everything (the PS4 still can't achieve that). And the free online was special as well - but I think it'll stick around for a little longer.

Considering I'm hearing talks of the PS5 already, some people even say 2019, it's probably a good idea to put the PS3 to rest.

I'm a late comer to the PS3 game.. so I have only had it for about 3 or 4 years.. I don't use it very often now since its been replaced by the PS4. However I still boot it up to play the DYRL game included on the Macross DYRL Blu-Rays.. so I foresee its use well into the future.. Smile

Somebody hasn't played any of the recent FFs. XIV and XV do not at all play themselves and X is piss easy.

Original PS debuted in USA in 1995 then the PS2 in 2000 followed by PS3 in 2006 then the PS4 came out in 2013. By this trend, it would be 2021 if we get a PS5.

Sony kept their promise of 10+ year console cycle even though the amount of games for the PS3 started to go downhill and stopped way before

Storage? What if you want to play something on that system again, or you find a game used that you might like? I mean, every system I have is still out in the open because I can never tell when I'll come across a used game or I decide to play something older again.

Wasn't that long ago I decided to whip out Legend of Dragoon and play it again. Talk about a game that deserved sequels or a new update. The only system I boxed up is my old Sega Genesis and original NES. Anything N64 and above still is out myself. Though currently the Gamecube and N64 are not hooked up. Only so many ports in the tvs after all. I still have them "out" though.
