Why does it feel like having an anime starring a female lead for the older female audiences that isn't a reverse harem lead such a rare breed? Even guy audiences gets a fair share of their own shows with guy leads.

There's a lot of manga like that but that formula doesn't do well with anime, as a number of attempts have shown, most probably because the main target demographics for those manga doesn't really watch TV anime. (NoitaminA's entire original concept was trying to address that target audience, and it didn't work.) Manga like those tend to be adapted into live-action movies and TV series. In any case though, while Haikara-san ga tooru is not a "reverse harem" (a concept that didn't even exist when the manga was published), pretty much every prominent male character ends up with feelings for Benio, minus one. And even its supposed "older female audiences" appeal just comes from nostalgia and retro value. (This is a pretty famous, classic manga.) |
