Ulysses 31 was quite unique with its striking mix of sensibilities in both visual and artistic terms. I wonder why we haven't seen too many successful attempts to mix space opera and world mythology after that project.

As much as I love Yamato, one can't really avoid recalling that the various sequels ended up being of a rather variable quality. I hope the new remakes don't fall into that trap. You could certainly do worse than Final Yamato though, so it's not meant as a criticism about that particular entry.

As a side note...the older movie version is fine, but the Toward the Terra TV series from 2009 has more than just updated character designs. It's arguably superior to the film adaptation in terms of storytelling quality and reflecting the original contents of the manga. Definitely recommended.

Why isn't Fate/Apocrypha in the poll? I really like its OP/ED this season.

Minor thing, but Ulysses 31 is a retelling of The Odyssey, not The Iliad. The Illiad is about the Greek war against the Trojans. The Odyssey is Odysseus' (Ulysses) journey home from said war.

Fixed. I always combine the two in my head for some reason.

I also added the 2nd ED for Fate/Apocrypha to the poll. Missed it since it premiered in July

I will have to try the film version of Toward the Terra at some point, until now I haven't bothered. BobSamurai, who did the review that got me to watch it, said the film was not very good.

The film is...clunky. It’s not bad, but the long timeframe the plot takes place over doesn’t have nearly enough room to breathe. It looks nice (in that 70s anime sci-fi kind of way, since while it came out in 1980, it is more a product of the 70s), but it didn’t age super well. Also, there’s an insert song or two that just feel really out of place. Unfortunately the manga and the series are both out of print in English, and while I’ve never read the manga, the series is pretty good.

While I'm happy to see that Space Adventure Cobra The movie made the list, I feel that the TV series was much better! You will, however, have no complaint from me about Macross being on the list since it was my gateway series and easily my favorite sci-fi anime!

Having seen and read all of Toward the Terra, I can comfortably put my preference order as TV>manga>movie.
The TV definitely hits everything right in terms of storytelling, and has that epic soundtrack to boot combined with fantastic animation. It expands both Seki Ray Shiroe's arc and the Naska arc quite a bit, places where breathing a little really helped the world expansion.
The manga is very good too, although compared to the TV, Shiroe and Naska both seemed rushed. But the entire last third of the series is very different from the anime, which alone kind of makes it worth it, if you can read it.
The movie, I mean, I find it 80s charming, but it's also completely skippable if you've either seen the TV or read the manga. It definitely needs to condense too much into its time frame so plenty of it seems rushed. I've always described it as the Cliffnotes version of the series.

What I really want is for Nozomi to license the TV series (since they have the movie), get the Animax dub (yes, Animax did a dub for it, not sure on the quality, but it exists), and then re-release the whole thing on bluray in some combo pack with the movie. That would just be so damn sweet!

I was going to post much the same thing. I also liked the Space Adventure Cobra anime series better than the movie (and I've finally been able to watch it with English subtitles thanks to the U.S. release). The show does lose a few points at the very end for the shear cheesiness of the final episode and the revelation of the arc's Big Bad.

Let's not forget "Mobile Suit Gundam" finished in late 1/1980. Thus, I think from a broadcast standpoint, it qualifies as an 1980s space opera anime.

I take the vaguest of interest in the other Super Dimension anime outings, knowing little about them other than their loose relationship to Macross and their respective opening themes. (My favourite of the latter is that of Ocguss, but the critical feedback concerning the series itself is less than uniformly positive, even from ardent genre fans.)

Orguss, I think you meant, is a weird show. I'll be honest, on one level, I'd love to see what Robotech would have ended up like if it had been part of it because of the weird "all of history is happening all at once" thing. The series already struggled quite a bit with incorporating Mospeada, but trying to explain where the space elevator and the bomb came from would be so much worse. It does have the advantage of being the only Macross "sibling" available from someone aside from Harmony Gold (Discotek has it).

I do enjoy Orguss, but it's got some weird pacing and odd story ideas.
