I don't think anyone who watches anime is unable to appreciate this show. There's something that everyone could relate to, be it the obessesive nerd, or the reluctant closet geek or anything in between. |

I hate the Way Media Blasters/AnimeWorks don't know how "Soft Subtitle" anywhere other than the Middle-Bottom of the screen. That means they don't Translate half of the stuff, and also that means when someone is talking, they don't translate on-screen stuff because they can't do 2 things at once.
Also, another thing, There is NO Translator Notes, or ANYthing like that, I'm telling you, my Fansubs were FULL of Translator's notes, and Proper Translating. This just shows that the dudes ain't fans, and just are doing it for the money. Why would you want to pay $30 for something not done right, when you can download it Far Superior for Free? Don't get me wrong, this show is amazing. They done the same damn thing with Ah! My Goddess TV Series. Screw AnimeWorks/Media Blasters. |

Uh, when I bought Vol. 2 of Genshiken, I got linear noter for this volume and volume 1.

And here's an example of people putting blame on american anime studio so they can feel guilt free from downloading free anime.
For many people, even the creator, anime and manga are created for their livelyhood. You're talking about a business world where money talks. While companies do put love in their work, it's not created to solely to show you how much love they have for anime, but how popular it gets and how well it sold. Fansub is far suprior? How? Better video? Nope. Better audio? Nope. More accurate translation? Nope. Fansub (tv source) will always be inferior to the dvd (original source). Anyway, I think all the whining is counter-productive when we could be discussing the show instead (I've already done my quota for allowable whining for today... yes, ashamed I am) Anyway, this volume was a lot of fun, I especially liked the last episode on disc (although, it's where the art and animation really dipped off) Come on, what could be better than life's little lessons through anime, video games and manga? Or more specifically, model building... damn, it's brilliant! *wow, I must've had a lot of fun  *

I really liked volume 1. I'm currently waiting for volume 2 to come in the mail :p
But I felt that Media Blasters actually did a really good job with volume 1, at least. Their dub script was charming, and the dub was at least as good as the Japanese version, with few sparse points. The extras were out of this world! Compared to most anime DVDs, the Kujibiki Unbalance episode, Under 17 live show, and Character discussion were interesting, insightful, and entertaining. And most of all, let's all remember, PlaMo's are not toys! |

Yeah, I really liked the dub too... the only time it felt flat for me was in the FIRST EPISODE, but after that it all floated pretty well with me. It's really laid back, but considering the show, I thought that it worked.
I really enjoy the fact that the cast sings a lot too, the thing on the second disc was hilarious. As for Kuji-un, I thought that the dub for the first episode was weird in a sense that it wasn't exaggerated enough and was too similar to the actual GENSHIKEN show (which was weird considering), but they fixed it pretty quickly with the "21st" episode found on the second disc. The last disc comes out in December... I'm kinda sad that this show is only 12 episodes long... but hey, that's how it is. |

I really liked the first DVD and mang, so I'm glad to hear it got the old ANN seal of approval. There is one thing that bothers me though: Kujibiki Unbalance. I don't care that it's supposed to simulate the usual conventions portrayed in modern anime, that doesn't stop it from being incredibly stupid. The character designs are ass. The story is silly and predictable. The animation is lame. Just the thought that anyone could even consider it being released on its own makes me want to walk away from anime forever (and people who illegally download fansubs and then try to justify doing so by saying that the retail version isn't as good as the bootleg).

Actually, I thought that Kuiji-un was stupiud fun...
but the question is that would I actually be willing to watch it if it wasn't affiliated with GENSHIKEN... I'm not too sure really Anyway, I like the fact that even though Kuji-un isn't a super duper complex thinking show, the GENSHIKEN members tackle it's characterization and plot-points and crap... They have really productive discussion about the show, so it's pretty impressive |

The dub for Genshiken was good, but the original cast was great. In my opinion, Genshiken is one of those rare titles that every fan of anime should at least check out.
Kujibiki Unbalance is stupid fun, but I think it's really to setup the cliche we see in anime. I didn't care much for it, but it does carry many traits that modern anime are known for. I haven't gotten volume 2 yet since I'm planning on getting it with volume 3 during the holiday. |

I was overall, very pleased with Media Blaster's release of Genshiken. They did a good job on the sub, they included a bunch of extras, and they had five episodes per disk. While I don't really like to complain that much, the one complaint would be about the person who wrote the liner notes. I didn't like his attitude. For example he wrote: "Shonen Magazine: As far as I know, this is an actual manga serial. I'm not sure if it's actually weekly or monthly though." He didn't sound very sure of this, shouldn't he know what he's talking about if he's writing this. Another example: "Final Fantasy: duh..." Did he ever think about that maybe somewhere, someone may not know what Final Fantasy is? There probably aren't many people who don't know about it, but I'm sure there are some who don't. Well, at least we got something, I just wish he would have taken this a little more seriously.

Sorry about that. The quality of the liner notes was due to a miscommunication. I assumed that someone would edit them after I submitted them but that didn't happen and they went in as-is. In the future I will be more careful about the professional quality of such things, not inserting personal notes or relying on conjecture. They just needed a bit of clean-up that was unfortunately overlooked.

Well, if it does, it'll be on purpose. Remember, it's only a 13-episode series.
Well, if you enjoy Yakitate!! Japan, I think you would. I honestly believe that Kuji-Un's sole reason for being what it is is to make fun of anime like Yakitate makes fun of the shounen archetype. |
