I have very mixed feelings about this manga.

For one, I get that the thing with having punpun's family be birds is supposed to add this filter through which you see his emotions, but I'm not sure that it adds anything really.

As for the story, I was on board with it until the spoiler[eye gouging scene]. That one was just ridiculous and unnecessary, and even given the context of everything that came before, I don't think it makes sense that that would happen. At that point I kind of got the sense that the author was just trying to be edgy for the sake of it, rather than explore some interesting and nuanced themes (which the manga did do earlier on).

I think that's also a japanese thing we don't get. But from what I'm sure, Punpun's bird form is supposed to represent someone that was tied down by his circumstances, fundamentalist world view, or moral obligations most of the time because symbolism here is a bird that can't fly. There are questions about these themes like freedom and obligations to fulfill a goal/promise in life; uncertainty of life; indecisiveness; existential crisis and questioning of morality, etc. spoiler[ About indecisiveness, Punpun, in his own bubble, not being able to send Aiko to hospital or police by himself till the end. ]
