Why? How?

The 5th and 1st characters haven't appeared in the manga in like at 15 years.. Heck, the same could be said about the 3rd place...
Heck, the 4th place, Shinji Ibu only had an important match at the very beginning of the manga (IIRC volume 4, which was released back in 1999 or something like that..)

I can only assume there are some japanese forums or something and fangirls just make campaigns for random characters, because really... 5th and 1st place make no sense at all, 4th doesn't either, but at least Shinji was already popular in the last polls, the 5th and 1st places totally came out of nowhere...

I was gonna say the same thing, 5th place really made me go WTF. When was the last time we even saw Kaneda??? I don't think he was really all that important even when he was in it. Shinji... surprising but at least he had more than 2 lines? He's also at least featured in filler episodes, whereas Kaneda is most definitely not. Amane in 1st is hilarious. There's someone REALLY dedicated out there to get him into #1. I mean, he had a couple moments in ShinPoT but other than that he's still a very minor character. Atobe/Fuji used to rank so high in these and now Atobe is #3 and Fuji didn't even make top 5. I'm starting to think these polls are as strange as the manga has gotten.

Maybe they tried too hard to dethrone Atobe or something. Either way this year's result is quite a let down.

I think the Seigaku vs Rokkaku musical was going on around the time the voting was happening, which could explain Davide's explosive rise to the top. (my top boys ended up at 17th and 20th which isn't bad)

But yay for some attention on unpopular characters! Even though I love Atobe, it's great that some other tennis boys get some time in the spotlight.
