Oh OK, I think I get it. The new story takes place in 2020-something'. Where society are accustomed to getting around in "smart" cars. So the MC seems to be a circuit racer. The visual looks like a mountain pass tho. So Shigeno kinda wants to stick with his roots. This might be very promising, I look forward to the first chapter.

I really love Initial D. I was a fan of it even before it came to the United States and was vaguely familiar with it when the first season anime was first getting produced (thank everything for the Anime Web Turnpike for introducing 90s anime fans to random stuff the mags didn't cover...).

Unfortunately - for myself at least - when the 2nd arc (Project D) of the manga started around the 200th chapter the series just started falling off the wagon for me. The premise seemed novel at the time but eventually it just became this constant recycling of races. Concepts would be brought in and not explained very well (like towards the end of the manga, where I'm guessing the "disappearing" of Takumi and Keisuke when driving simply signified their greater speed), and I'm utterly convinced Shuichi Shigeno must of had woman issues because he does a terrible job dealing with his character's relationships.

There is also the underlying facet of the series simply going on WAY too long for it's intended timeline. The original story is supposed to effectively take place over the span of two years in the mid to later 90s, but because the manga carried on for so long Shigeno had to pull in newer cars, fashion, and items that wouldn't have existed in the actual time line to keep the story relevant. The introduction of the Nissan Z33 late in the series was a very obvious time line breaker for example.

I tried to read Sailor Ace and at that time I was thinking "maybe Shigeno should stick to cars" but now that he's doing this series I don't know what he should stick to.

Nope, the image says it takes place on the streets again.

The "199X" thing did not last very long. Initial D's timeline isn't bound by our reality. You're overthinking this.
