This sounds extremely similar to another series that I've seen except the Mage was male and refused to work for the kingdom and the soldier was a female. The mage was friends with one of the royals and did go on adventures for him with the soldier coming along. I can't recall the name of the series.

From what I can dig so far, it ends up pretty different though. Grancrest IMO feels closer to older fantasy anime titles. But we'll see.

I've read a bit of the manga and it's pretty good so far (yes, I know the novel is the source material) but as long as it doesn't turn into a harem or love triangle then I'm on board with this.

Yeah, that's the show I was thinking of from that post as well, it was okay.
