And worse yet, according to the article, these numbers don’t have data from Amazon. Counting comic book shops would have been noteworthy 10 or 15 years ago, when Borders, Media Play, B. Dalton, and Waldenbooks all still existed. Now it feels like they’re just getting any kind of retail numbers they can, while there are any retailers left.

Comic shops are niche but that's the very reason they've been able to stay afloat: You can't buy the experience online.

I feel this announcement, though, is far more applicable to domestic comics than manga. Comic stores sell singles which major bookstores (outside of a few titles in-store) and Amazon (outside of sellers) don't. Manga are basically treated as books, and are more mainstream, so major bookstores' and Amazon's sales figures are more pertinent.

I would, also, be interested in seeing Amazon's sales take vs. unit count for each book, as Amazon is infamous for being willing to take a bath on its physical merchandise, and bring the publisher with them.

I used to work in a comic shop during my high school years. Still kept in touch with the owner after all these years. Most of his profits stem from events like TCGs and tabletop games these days. Comics there are sadly a minimal factor of his profit, for a vairety of reasons.
