you know you live in a sad world when an anime about cute 10 year old girls doing random cute things makes more money then blade runner.

WOW. That's a little, sad to see to be honest. But then again, this is Japan, cute girls doing cute things will win regardless. Just kidding, I wish I could know if the new Bladerunner movie is that bad? I'm too busy to go to a movie theater.

It'd be more sad of a world if cute girls (who are neither 10 years old, or doing cute things as a focus) couldn't beat manly men doing heavy action, anywhere.

I'm glad for Toei, I don't think the last couple of Precure movies made the #1 spot from what I remember, so I guess that means the kids were really excited to go to this one? I hope those kids had a good time

You know it's a sad world when you make a dumb comment without reading the article.

Quote:
The Eiga Kirakira ☆ Precure a la Mode: Paris to! Omoide no Mille-Feuille! (Kirakira ☆ Precure a la Mode the Movie: With Paris! Mille-Feuille of Memories) anime film opened at #1 at the Japanese box office from October 28-29. The film, which is the 23rd in the Precure anime franchise, sold 170,659 tickets on 217 screens to earn 193,101,900 yen (about US$1.7 million). The American live-action film Blade Runner 2049, which ranked at #2 for the weekend, sold 149,947 tickets on 593 screens for 226,493,800 yen (US$2.0 million). Although Blade Runner 2049 earned more at the box office, it ranked behind the new Precure film because it sold fewer tickets.

Besides not noting this in Japan where the movie was released. It's Precure...you know the big magical girl franchise for kids by Toei? There's definitely a percentage of otaku buying the tickets here but under estimating the family/kid tickets by comparison is a mistake. I mean you didn't read the article anyway but whatever.

As the article notes, the newest Precure movie did not make more money than Blade Runner 2049. Precure sold more tickets during the weekend — but children's tickets cost less than regular tickets, so Blade Runner 2049 earned more yen.

Blade Runner 2049 also opened on Friday, one day before Precure. Japan's weekend box office charts do not count Friday, so they did not include Blade Runner 2059's opening day total.

Precure is a huge franchise. Compared to your late night CGDT, Precure is a morning show geared towards the younger demographics. It's in the same group with OP,DBS, Case Closed, Doraemon, Sazae-san, Pokemon, Yokai Watch etc. morning and primetime kid shows.

I am not surprised, BR 2049 story wasn't represented well in the trailers (which in some ways is a good thing) and some movie trailers don't transfer well during the promotion phase in international territories.

BR 2049 hopefully will do better when it hits Blu-ray format, at the very least people SHOULD catch this film when it goes on Netflix.

I am glad I watched this film in theatres before it left.

From what I hear it's a sexist movie only enjoyable by white men, so it was probably a fun and enjoyable flick. I just don't care. I'm sick of remakes, reboots, and sequels. I'm all franchise fatigued out for Hollywood's nostalgia mining. Not surprised if it didn't do well though since the original wasn't successful either.

Why is it sad? It is not that different from a Disney princess movie beating a serious scifi movie at the box office.

A G rated kids movie sold more tickets than an R rated movie, this shouldn’t be a surprise or something to be “sad” about. That’s a pretty common thing in any country because whole families can go to a movie for kids, where as typically less people go to an R rated movie because there’s more restrictions on it. Plus as people have said Precure is already an established popular franchise in Japan, but even so Blade Runner did pretty good.

Also if you’re being insulting towards Otaku types going to Precure, why? They simply enjoy the things they like, acting all high and mighty as if you’ve got supior taste would just make you look like a jerk.

You are free to complain about Hollywood endlessly "recycling old concepts", but I will have to pin down when people comment negatively on things they admit they have not watched.
If you watched a film or series and didn't like it, that is an expression of an opinion and no one can argue when an individual didn't enjoy an experience, however making a negative remark on something a viewer did not see is the definition of being dishonest.

For my experience, BR 2049 did not feel like a dime a dozen "pump this film out for a quick buck" type of project, there could be market fatigue already with release of "dark future" content that hit the big screen and as such people are burned on the concept.

Yeah, that's totally what Precure is "about".

Random cute things.

I'm not sure how Blade Runner being at number two is a sign that it's doing badly in Japanese theaters because an anime that's popular with girls happened to outdo it. It still seems like Blade Runner is doing a lot better in Japan than it did in America.
