This was very interesting. It was less about the new movie and more just about their experiences with the franchise as a whole, but that's still cool. They all seem like pretty crazy people.

I feel stupid for never having noticed Oshii cribbed Motoko's spinning kick from Virtua Fighter. They really did a great job animating that.

This took me by surprise as well. I expect that this revelation could mark a seismic change in the norms of Oshii fan lore: "Oh, if you really want to understand where Ghost was coming from, you have to start with learning how to use a dedicated block button..."

Curiosity: Kazuchika Kise was animation director of the series Made in Abyss. He is a long time friend of Muneki Ogasawara [former Bones studio member] who along with Masaki Tachibana - director of Princess Principal last season - a former Production I.G employee, founded Kinema Citrus.

To be a corporate shill for a second (I work with Kodansha), the whole book is really worth picking up. It's a hardcover with a lovely matte/spot gloss cover, and it includes a lot of amazing design sketches and art as well. (io9 previewed some of those sections today, too: https://io9.gizmodo.com/the-stunning-art-behind-20-years-of-ghost-in-the-shell-1820181428 )

And it's cheap on Righstuf right now: https://www.rightstufanime.com/Ghost-in-the-Shell-README-1995-2017-Hardcover

Well, I'm glad that Kodansha is printing a book like this in English. There are tons of translated books about video games, but not enough translated books about anime.

Nice to see that the three of them has such genuine respect for each other. And of course, they would be very diplomatic about the live action movie... Maybe it will make Oshii consider going back to anime-directing. He did say it made him reflect anew on animation's virtues.

It's good to hear from the people behind "Ghost in the Shell." Especially their view of Hollywood's version of their little project. Although I think "Ghost in the Shell" is a fairly interesting show, there are things I don't like about it. Things that I've discussed here and are pretty well-known here and things I'm not going to go into here. One of my big things is that it's a shame that Mary Elizabeth McGlynn didn't get a cameo appearance in that movie. She was the most famous actress to play the Major in the English version of the anime. I'd loved to have seen that. It's a shame that it didn't happen.
