Did Sony really submit The Emoji Movie? Even Hasbro knew better than to try My Little Pony and that received better reviews!

Perhaps if Your Name was able to submit after US Release it would have had a better chance. Who knows Mary, Corner, and Voice may have a chance.

So nearly all that anime's going to get struck off that list (SAO is pretty much a given honestly would the Academy even consider a nomination to that?), I honestly hope Emoji get's struck off the nomination list because it's hilarious it even being put there in the first place.

None of this will go anywhere but This Corner of the World certainly deserves to compete on a world stage in regard to last year´s animated releases.

Given that several Academy voters over the years have straight-up admitted that they let their kids or grandkids vote this award, it's pretty much certain the winner will be big US studio family product, like it is every year. My bet is on "Coco", since the rest of the Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks/Sony product has been so bad, it stands to win by default.

Some of these choices are laughably bad. Coco WILL win, that's a fact.

The American animated nominees are bad this year. The Boss Baby? The Emoji Movie?! Really? The best one/clear winner is probably Coco. The Lego Batman Movie also should be nominated at least.

The competition being so bad this year does increase my hopes that A Silent Voice, Mary and the Witch's Flower, or In This Corner Of The World could at least get nominated. Napping Princess seems a little too out there to get it, and SAO is...SAO.

Expect the nominees to be a bit less diverse this time around due to the voting rules changing, now that all academy members can vote for the nominees instead of just those within the animation branch.

Yes, and Sony also really submitted "The Star". Shocked (Just like Fox really submitted "Ferdinand".)
At the submission stage, you can ask, that don't mean you git.

Even though we know that only two "art" foreign/arthouse animateds ever symbolically make it onto the five, and only one of those is likely to be anime.

SAO well, the Academy Board would have to watch all the show I guess to get the movie? Or they would just judge it on it being a standalone movie?

Alec Baldwin probably is good friends with the Academy people.

This is the only reason I can think of it being nominated even though it has zero chance against Coco or Your Name, Mary and World

For years, it was always traditionally Disney/Pixar, Dreamworks, and Third-Party Studio To Be Named Later if it was three nominations (even the very first award was Monsters Inc, Shrek, and Paramount/Nick's Jimmy Neutron)--And Katzenberg's money made SURE there was one Dreamworks every year, trying like Ahab to get Shrek's second Oscar.
Unless it was a five-nom year, in which it would be Disney and/or Pixar, Dreamworks, Third Party Studio To Be Named Later If No WDFA, and two arthouse foreign/indies, to show how generously the animation insiders were voting.

...It'll be kind of different from now on, with no Dreamworks to kick around anymore. Sad
