Agreed. I always thought that 3x3 Eyes got the short stick as far as anime releases go. The manga was very popular and ran for a long time as this article makes clear, yet there were only a total of 5 episodes animated. It seems strange that such a popular manga had such a short anime treatment. I had heard rumors in the early 2000's that there was talk of a new TV series, but it fell through because Yuzo Takada refused to edit down the violence to make it suitable for a TV broadcast. That may have been an issue for a normal TV schedule but I can't see it being much of an issue for today's late-night broadcast. |

I always liked the art from this series, especially the coverart Streamline Pictures used for their VHS releases.

Even if Dark Horse failed to release it in full, at least the main series got fully scanlated later on. No such thing for the recent 4-volume sequel, that one remains in limbo... |

I remember when DH tried to publish this title along with a few others like 'Outlanders'. Anybody that remembers that time knows what happened next.
The thing that is puzzling me is that at this time we're hearing Yuzo Takada get mentioned and honored a lot. Not saying that they shouldn't mention him I mean there are quite a bit of artists of the past that have kind of faded into a sort of obscurity. But there's constant mention of a 30th Anniversary and an exhibition of his work (again what are the odds considering that it has been a few years since Takada-san has been mentioned but has been steady working) but yet no mention of giving his series an animated series in the same vein as 'Ushio & Tora'. And mind you 'Ushio & Tora' is more niche when compared to '3x3 Eyes'. I mean what were the odds that 'Ushio & Tora' would get a series? Let alone I hadn't seen hid nor hair of that artist until he mentioned a few years ago. Then sometime later he gets an anime. Now it's time that Takada gets his series made. The series is done and people can not only be brought back to an older story, new fans and finally a series animated to competion. And they can have Megumi Hayashibara reprise her role as 'Pai'. The time to do this project is NOW!!! |

Yes there was. Megumi herself did a PV for her new song to commemorate the series. It looks beautiful and I really thought it would eventually get the Ushio & Tora treatment too. However, nothing has been announced since then. That's the video. https://youtu.be/RGOZWnZ3sYo |

Oh, what I'm saying is those that remembered when DH/Studio Proteus tried publishing those books, but they never went that far. I'm not saying I know what the politics were for why they were cancelled. But I'm sure ANN or anyone who knew about those releases that didn't get any further than what? 5 issues? I don't know exactly how many books were put out. They were out for awhile then then they just stopped. I only remember when I did see them out because I had close friends who had started buying them, because 1) they were comic collectors and 2) they were already collecting a vol or two of the Japanese print. But 'Outlanders' and '3x3 Eyes' were 2 titles they tried to publish. Because this was during the time they were trying to start a introduction to manga long after Akira was published through Marvel. Around the time of SMB'. But the books were in comic format. So there was no way that project was going to be completed. |

The parallel with Ushio & Tora is a good find.
You can compare it to Blue Seed too : another work by Yuzo Takada with Megumi Hayashibara as the main heroine voice. anime#8 Blue Seed has had a good adaptation : the TV serie starts with a "lethal monster of the day" simple structure, but the second half (more the last third) is one big thrilling arc, full of tensions, mysteries, fights, tactics, politics, twists and revelations... The conclusion of the story is really great and surprising. Kenji Kawai's haunted music brings the dark and suffocating atmosphere. 3x3 Eyes anime version by the same team would have been great. But we are looking at a 40 vol. manga here, something almost as long as Dragonball : it's not easy to produce and most of the time long series are not going well with good adaptation. |

I'm not sure by what you mean "what happened next". Dark Horse has brought out quite a few manga series over the years. Some they completed some they unfortunately did not. I suspect that sales had more to do with completion of a series than any sort of "politics" Of the two series you mentioned, 3X3 Eyes was initially published as five comic books between 9/91 and 2/92 by Innovation Comics. In March 1995 these episodes were reprinted by Dark Horse as a flipped graphic novel covering the first arc of the series. DH then published five additional comics books between 10/95 and 2/96 covering the second arc of the series. These were reprinted as a graphic novel under the title 3X3 Eyes The Curse of the Gesu. The series then went on hiatus until they started publishing their anthology Super Manga Blast. They subsequently published six additional graphic novels for a total of eight. Unfortunately the series eventually ran to 40 volumes in Japan most of which are not likely to be published here. Outlanders took place in a different time frame. Dark Horse issued the complete series in the form of 33 numbered comic books (floppies) between 12/88 and 9/91 later followed by a 0 issue a Special issue and an Epilog for a total of 36 comics. This was eventually reissued in seven graphic novels between March 96 and September 99. They later issued all of Caravan Kidd by the same author Johji Manabe and some of his later series Drakuun. |
