There were some negative comments about the film getting long version in the discussion thread of this article, but if you read manga, you know the film skipped some contents, and especially story about Rin and her implied relationship with Shusaku is I think very important one. It will most likely be the highlight of the long version film.

^^I think the same way and am looking forward to the longer version. Shusaku's remarks about Suzu being small make more sense spoiler[with the involvement of the (taller) Rin]. I recommend BookWalker's version as the side notes are easily readable and I think ~$9ea. is worth what you get with the excellent story and utterly charming artwork.

Rose's views on the film's structure are the same as my own. By the time the storytelling is at its clearest and most focussed, the situation is so horrid that the slight joys Suzu finds in her life are very difficult to appreciate. Thank goodness the gentler sections have a format to do them justice.

I love both the manga and the anime, flaws and all. My mom's getting me both of them for Christmas. Very Happy

I actually really liked the movie's odd plot structure. By making it really back-heavy, there's this constant sense of building dread, this feeling of oh man, it's coming. that pervades all the more mundane events that come before, especially amplified by the fact that the characters themselves don't know what's coming. I also think the calm before the storm and taking the time to show how these people really lived was great because it made it much more impactful when their way of life is disrupted.

Agreed. 100%. I personally feel that showing what the characters are like before the dramatic stuff comes in actually helps the audience to actually give a damn about the characters rather than just throwing everything at them in an attempt to make the audience cry for them.

I liked the film for what it was...

I rarely read manga anymore -- the expense, the lack of access at libraries, the stinginess of digital copies available for loan. If I have to spend my money, it'll probably on the 5-inch disc.
I just generally end seeing the anime version only. I seriously doubt I'll ever sit down and read all of the Akira manga ever!

If I do ever see the manga version of this available on library loan, I might check it out.
The characters were charming enough and I think would be worth another look in the manga.

I got lucky that our electronic system had virtually all the Vampire Hunter D manga translated available in e-format. The pickings are still scarce for electronic versions of most manga for obvious licensing and other legal reasons...

I was disappointed a bit with the movie after I read the manga considering they cut a whole chunk of her friendship with Rin spoiler[and the implications that dearest husband was that good customer. The reason his notebook had a torn corner was never touched in the movie.].

I don't regret opting to read the manga to see this extra content and I'd love to see it in the movie.

I read it online on a short-lived service that brought over quite a lot of manga not translated anywhere else. I believe it was called Jmanga. It made me cry. The artist has a gift for drawing girls in a way that says vulnerability and lovableness. When the poor girl goes through the bombing, it's heartbreaking.
