Nah, Othinus looks nothing like that.

On another note I thought Accelerator was holding a gun, why was he using it like a sword?

Sooo when does this take place chronogically? Touma and Misaki have their winter uniforms in the game and Accelerator still wants to kill Touma, so I assume it's some time in October, but Lessar and Acqua are here so it would be during the events of GREMLIN saga in November??????

When it comes to Index, fans inevitably manage to figure out where even the non-canon stuff takes place on the timeline!

It's been a long time since I last played Virtual On (back on the Dreamcast), but I seem to recall the Spessinef's gun doubled as some kind of scythe thing.

It's a transforming scythe gun.

This is supposed to be a sequel to the novel where Accelerator helps Touma. Virtual On in the crossover is generally a virtual sport rather than real combat.

So, if one is a Virtual On fan, and completely new to Index, what should I watch to not be lost when I play the game?

The two anime adaptations are in continuity with one another, and both of them are designed as independent entry points into the franchise, so you might as well pick the one that corresponds to the robots you like the most.

The first season of A Certain Magical Index (based on the original light novel series) focuses on the pilots of the Temjin, Val Larune, Spessinef, Raiden, Dodray, and Apharmd C.

The first season of A Certain Scientific Railgun (based on the franchise's most popular spinoff manga) focuses on the pilots of the Raiden, Fei-Yen, Grys-Vok, and Apharmd S.

(The pilots of the Apharmd B and Cypher won't be heavily featured in animated form until the third season of A Certain Magical Index, which comes out next year. The pilot of the Angelan won't really make anything more than cameo appearances until the third season of Railgun or the fourth season of Index, whenever those get made.)

In terms of content, Index is a sci-fi / fantasy action show that focuses much more on the franchise's harem comedy elements, while Railgun is more of a slice-of-life / middle-school-girls-with-superpowers hybrid show.
