Yeah, that is...not promising. The only thing that gives me any hope for this rehash is that Dai Sato is involved once again. No disrespect to Tomoki Kyoda, but every attempt to cash in on the franchise since the original series has been mediocre at best and a hot mess at worst.

^^Amen, brother! When the interviewer asked if there would be attempts to link to AO (pronounced OOWwww) I was thinking they had better not! Same for Good Night(!) Saying they would use nothing from that and maybe only the lighting effects from AO were the right answers for me...

If they were intending to draw new fans with this movie, I can't say that they succeeded. Even as someone who's seen the series multiple times, there were parts where I was confused about what the hell was going on, though that was mixed with wondering why the hell it was going on. Why they thought the "bumpiness in the continuity of the story" was a good idea is a question I don't think has been answered satisfactorily for me.
If they wanted to reward fans of the original, I will give them partial credit. The Summer of Love portion was well worth watching and is the main reason I would give the movie a overall positive rating. But after that...not so much. Even some fans who had initially insisted that the "bumpiness in the continuity" made sense if you'd seen the series had given up and joined the horror and disdain that came out every time the words Play Back appeared on the screen. If it served a purpose, I surely didn't see it. My hope for the next movies is that they don't make the continuity so...bumpy. |

I'm glad. Fans are debating about the quality of Eureka Seven once again. It's just like 12 years ago.
To be honest, I wasn't a fan of Eureka Seven's first cour. I really wasn't sure what made me keep watching to begin with. (Because of that reason, I expect to not like the first movie.) Only after the second cour's start, things started to get interesting, and finally I started to "get" it. Seeing how AO ended up, I think Dai Sato's involvement pLays a huge part in the franchise's first success. However, I also think Tomoki Kyoda's the one who makes the visuals work. From the interview, I presume he's just the kind of person who sees things too differently compared to most of the people. At least he gets the job done. Dare I suggest that this admission is a small mercy? From what I understand, the original film was a curiosity, to put things mildly. Quite tellingly, I received my as-of-yet unwatched copy of it for free at a convention. |

Watching this film at Otakon, I can remember my frusteration boiling up inside of me with the appearance of each new title-card prompting yet another timeskip. I thought, (appropriating a line from Rick and Morty’s Purge episode) “Can we cut to 40 minutes ago when this movie wasn’t a complete dumpster fire?”
