There's no way we're getting a third season...the anime wasn't a huge hit. But...I so hope I'm wrong!

I'm hoping that the government and taxpayers will once again subsidize another anime season of Chihayafuru, but to not get my hopes up I'd say it's likely another live-action movie or perhaps even TV dorama.

Please a 3rd season! Since March comes in like a lion S2 should conclude in February, I wouldn't even say that's completely unlikely – or was another show already announced by NHK for that time slot?

NHK doesn't make shows to sell discs, so that isn't a good indicator by any means. As far as I know, the show re-aired on NHK several times, so it's certainly not unpopular.

I would love nothing more than to be wrong about this, but I don't think a third anime season is coming, especially now that Morio Asaka is busy directing the new Card Captor Sakura series. Instead, I think the manga might be coming to an end soon.

Previous reports have indicated that next year's live-action film will cover the material after the anime ends. I doubt we'll see another anime season, but we can hope!

Quote:
Chihayafuru: Musubi is set two years after the events of the second film. Producer Naoki Kitajima previously confirmed that this film would be the last, due to the actors’ ages. Director Norihiro Koizumi is returning to the director’s chair for the project.

I also expect that the announcement will be that the manga is coming to an end.

What the live-action does is irrelevant to what the anime does. They're entirely different teams of unrelated people.

This is really only one of two things:

1. New Anime
2. Manga ending

I'm betting on a stage play announcement just because this is the year of series I most want new anime seasons from getting stage plays instead (the other two being Mob Psycho 100 and Oofuri).

The most important thing is what Kodansha wants. If Kodansha thinks the best method to promote the manga is through live-action movies that's what we'll get. The fact that we haven't seen any more anime releases, while they have made two movies and are ready to release a third, tells me the publisher doesn't see an anime release as the best strategy.

In other Chihayafuru related news: 『ちはやふる 秀歌撰』 [「ちはやふる・しゅうかせん」(Chihayafuru Syuukasen - per NTV)] - has its own web page on the NTV website.
