Man, CR keeps em coming, and yeah, Kiddy Grade was a good series to watch over pasttime on that one channel on Dish that had the Funimation block.
At least Kiddy Girl-And is now out lately stateside on home video, lol. |

Kiddy Grade and Solty Rei have both managed to remain on my proverbial radar for the best part of a decade. On occasions, I teeter on the matter of whether they might just be worth watching. Perhaps their seemingly inane titles helped them in this respect.

I remember back when Newtype USA magazine was pushing Kiddy Grade HARD. Like, they had a feature in every monthly issue for most of a year. I assume they inherited writing and layouts from the parent Newtype magazine that they could just re-use? The title was always a weird sticking point with me, along with the idea that (IIRC) the protag has some kind of whip weapon that comes out of her lipstick dispenser or something? |

One of my favorites as well. I suggest it from time to time over at MAL, but it will always remain a niche series. I was frankly quite surprised that Funimation licensed it in the first place, thinking it was "too Japanese" to be accessible to broader Western audiences. (Though, to be fair, the cast do worry about how the show will play in the West, especially in the opening to episode fourteen.) I started watching the "making-of" episodes that accompany Kill la Kill whose script was written by the author of the play on which Oh! Edo Rocket is based, Nakashima Kazuki. Watching him and director Imaishi Hiroyuki swap ideas in a story conference shows how zany both those men can be. They each seem to amp up the zaniness in the other. |

I don't know that I've ever seen a satisfactory explanation for why KG is titled what it is; it may be one of those cases where the name was chosen by someone who didn't know English well. It does have at least something to do with the apparent youth of several key characters, though. Yes, one of the main characters does use whips which manifest from lipstick dispensers, while another uses bombs in the form of wine bottles. Those are just gimmicks, though. If you do check out the series, be aware that it starts slow, as the actual plot doesn't really kick in until episode 9, but it's a surprisingly involved and potent one once it starts. The actual essential theme of the series can be summarized in two lines of dialogue from episode 12: spoiler["Everyone dreams of eternal youth. The problem is how one lives with it once they have it."] The series is also significant on the voice acting front, as the English dub features the breakthrough role for Colleen Clinkenbeard (as Eclair) and the Japanese dub features the breakthrough role for Aya Hirano (as Lumiere). It's also a special series for me, as I believe one of its original singles was the first review I did for ANN. Solty Rei, which is also a Gonzo production, also is a bit of a slow starter, as I think its weakest episodes are early on. It also eventually features surprisingly involved plot and character development and what I think is one of the all-time-great English male vocal performances: Christopher Sabat as co-star Roy Revant. It's also one of the rare series where one the leads is an older man. While not a top-level series, it's good enough and involving enough that I rewatch it about once a year, so I can definitely recommend it, too. |

So Inari Kon Kon and D-Frag are available in all Nordic countries.... except for Finland. How does that happen? Well, I've already seen them through other means... but how does Finland get left out like that?

Highly recommend Oh Edo Rocket. It's the other good show Nakashima wrote around the time of Gurren Lagann (he even has a cameo in one episode).
Also has one of my favorite openings of all time |

This is excellent news. I have been wanting to rewatch Kiddy Grade for a long time now. I absolutely loved the show when it came out years ago. It has a fantastic dub as well.
