Thankfully, 95% of these old dubs have been preserved via the Internet. You can still get edited Sailor Moon on VHS for cheap as well. (Cardcaptors and Knights of the Zodiac's edited DVD volumes are a little steep, especially as you get into later volumes.)

The movie was at least uncut (and while the UK DVD had some well made menus, unfortunately it one had the English audio track), but they completely changed the relationship between Clow and.. whatever her name was (and there's an annoying line about Li being a "direct descendant" of Clow which, if you've read the manga to the end, is clearly impossible).

But neither company managed to get the old dubs that aired on American television, which a lot of people remember fondly.

I've met a few people who like Sailor Moons dub, despite its flaws. But I've only ever heard universal hate for the dub for CCS.

I've got a friend who isn't into Anime, but he really liked Sailor Moon, and he was able to get a hold of the original English dub on DVD.

"Lost forever" is such an exaggeration, they're definitely all still archived on the internet. I know people wanna buy em officially, and I respect that, but to pretend that information literally vanishes when it's not being sold is a really flawed way of thinking.

The question is why would you even want the old cardcaptors dub, that thing was horrendous.

"That many people remember fondly"

lol I know I'm being snarky but Nelvana and DIC were considered to have ruined anime at the time and even for at least a decade afterwards by more hardcore fans. I know someone else mentioned that the old dub wasn't good and I agree. I can't stand having the super cut up anime and tbh I remember not liking the dub voices although I've become more accepting of dub voices lately so maybe that opinion has changed.

I have to personally agree with those who just can't understand those who LIKED the Cardcaptor Sakura dub, but I do think there are those that probably find value in preserving it for personal enjoyment and I do feel for them. I don't think it'd be worth a company's time or money, though, to bring it back. It's more a collector's object and is probably worth more without a re-release.

Part of me is saddened that we no longer have the supremely cheesy, ridiculous censored dubs of the 90s anymore. On the one hand it's great for retaining as much of the original work as possible. But on the other hand it deprives masochistic trash gluttons such as myself of cheap laughs Sad

I still have some DVDs of DiC's Sailor Moon dub - which occasionally had its decent moments mixed in with glorious inanity and some beautifully bad lines/acting. (I managed to traumatize a Portuguese friend by showing her the opening of DiC dub Sailor Moon - she was mortified and we hadn't even got as far as the dialogue!) In spite of my jabs, I did genuinely enjoy some of its efforts, including some of the 90s pop songs such as 'Power of Love' and 'Who do you think you are?'

I almost wish that Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card arc was getting a terrible censored version with all those inappropriate voices and anglicized names and the really painful attempts to hide how LGBT the whole show is. It made me appreciate the actual show all the more! (As when I did discover the originals of these two aformentioned shows I ended up liking the LGBT characters who had been so heavily censored most.)

Though in all honesty I still think the Pokemon 90s dub was awesome. (I've tried watching the JP original but it's just not got that same goofy charm.) Those kinds of voices and lines probably wouldn't work for most other anime but somehow when applied to Pokemon, a 90s dub ended up improving the material and giving it more humour and energy than it originally had. Maybe it's because the Pokemon anime itself has enough corniness and over the top silliness that a 90s dub is a perfect match for it?

I vaguely recall Toei actively stating they own the rights to the American dub of Sailor Moon and would not be re-releasing it. Or I am mistaking some fan explanation or whatever.

I will still hold onto the sliver of hope that someday, Discotek will pick up Shaman King, with the 4Kids dub included
