I mean...it can't be called the "complete series" when there are scenes missing from certain episodes and two more episodes that will be covered in a release that released on Dec. 23rd. Wink

Yoshitsune makes less of an impression and perhaps strays most from historical detail, portrayed as a 19-year old bishonen (he died when he was 30) and a master archer (he was known as a master swordsman). The recurring joke is that his whole family was composed of bishonen.

I think you meant Nasu No Yoichi instead of Minamoto no Yoshitsune everywhere except in the case of Greg Ayres who does indeed play Yoshitsune - Yoichi is the one who hangs out with Toyohisa and Nobunaga Wink (They do look awfully alike in this - I saw some people assume they were brothers with Yoshitsune being some evil bish niisan Laughing )

Having never watched Hellsing I went into DRIFTERS expecting to not be that fussed as I'm really not a fan of action but I ended up loving the wild takes on various historical figures (especially some of the ENDS) and how much focus went into the various strategies in each battle and the war itself. Nobunaga I was particularly impressed by on account of how he comes off as a tactical genius in this considering every opportunity and seizing upon the discovery both of firearms and the Octobrist's magic.

The humour is indeed not for everyone - I personally enjoyed bits of it but there are definitely moments that can feel too clunky and a detriment to the flow of the story. Other times however DRIFTERS can be so unapologetically ridiculous that for it to try being serious would be a waste; my favourite character ended up being Naoshi Kanno on account of how goofy his scenes were. His meeting with Scipio Africanus was one of the biggest laughs I had that season.

Now to wait patiently for... however many years it takes for a second season Laughing

Fix'd. (I think.)

I haven't seen the anime, so maybe it actually does call it the Battle of Sekigahata, but the Battle of Sekigahara "is widely considered to be the unofficial beginning of the Tokugawa" shogunate.

They invited Rasputin and Hitler, but snubbed Nicola Tesla? Outrage! (meh)

personally for a typical dub only person to me, i definitely wasn't a fan of this one and that's saying a lot. B+ was way to generous. the heavy accents in the dialogue makes it sound way too forced and not natural considering that the series had characters from different countries.

personally i would give it a C+ and this is from a die hard dub watcher which is saying something.

I really wasn't a fan of Drifters at all... While Kouta Hirano has always been something of a edgelord, In Hellsing, he manged to find the right balance between being serious and not serious to be fun. Here... Well, there are politics of the militant nationalist kind lurking in the background. There is Count St. Germain, the awful gay stereotype, There is the Black King who if his true identity is what is mostly likely being hinted at will be so very trite in its attempt to be shocking and transgressive. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth altogether.

For me Drifters was a fun, dumb action series chained to an awful comedy. "hahaha the old man done pissed himself" "hahaha the gay man is gay" over & over again, like it was written by a 12 year old who just learned the word twink but doesn't really know what it means, only that it gets a reaction. & they just went on & on.

It was the worse for being so unecessary, since the setting & characters are silly enough that it's funny just watching them be themselves. There's one cut where Toyohisa grabs the head of one guy he just killed & all but says "yoink" which was funnier (& more memorable) to me than any of the actual "comedy" skits. I find anime tends to be pretty bad at mixing in comedy scenes anyway, but this is one of the frew occasions where it actually made watching it a worse experience.

I couldn't finish the show due to the terrible tone killing comedy. Shame cause the action bits were great.

Yeah I really enjoyed this season.

I think you have a good take on the comedy as I feel pretty much the same. The comedy is not as a short and sharp as in Hellsing, but it didn't ruin anything for me and there were times where it nicely added to the crazy action scenes. There are certainly times where it's pretty clunky and this is probably the thing that hurts it most for some people, or also too much at once a couple of times, but it's also something that I think makes the illusion of the show and it's all-out nature work. It's just so gleeful and always looking to (wonderfully) ridiculously top itself that I thought the goofy comedy was fine (much of the time).

I'm extremely curious how we are going to hopefully get these future episodes if they are really just going to continue making this for a while straight to disc. It feels like we're still pretty early in this large scale battle/story.

You should definitely give Hellsing a watch when you can. Smile
