Just a spinoff, but releasing year after year is milking the series quite a bit too much.

I thought the manga was great and I am looking forward to the anime. I have never understood the amount of hate that SAO gets but since the spin off has a female protagonist it will probably get less of that.

The second season was released in 2014.

I honesly rather having them adapating the progressive LN's. Aincrad arc is imo still the best one.

It ircs tf outta me when people say "they never understood the hate". Majority of the time its either due to people not liking the fact that a series is so popular or simply cause it's just that bad for them, it's not rocket science. And I think where pass the point where a series doesn't get sh*t simply because it has a female lead cause that doesn't stop it from being bad. Although I do know people that are willing to glorify a series for the simple fact that it does have one so you might be right.

Not a fan of SAO, but I'm hoping this spin-off will surprise me in a positive way. The lack of the two main tumors, Asuna and Kirito, is already a big plus.

Maybe a decade down the road when SAO is inevitably considered a classic (I'm not a fan, but seeing the raw success it's the truth). This will be a better tideover present in the meantime, as will Clover's Regret if that ever gets adapted.

People do the same thing with male characters. You have females that mainly watch shows with male characters because they're so handsome/cute/sexy, the females that watch mostly male casts to ship dudes together. Lots of ladies think Kirito is so handsome and/or cute. There's males out there that do the same thing, but commonly you see guys saying how cool and badass the males are, but most of all I see a lot of guys that say they can't get into a series without a main male character because "they're not a woman and can't relate to them at all". Which personally I don't understand, if there's a good character that's compelling regardless of gender, race, species, you should be able to empathize with them in some way.

Of course guys and girls do the same thing with female characters. That's my entire point however, there's always people and groups of people that prefer certain characters and types of characters. It all balances out at the end of the day, so I think it's a tad silly to point out how "some" people prefer female characters and "some" people over look certain flaws simply because the main character is female. The same thing happens with "some" people doing that with male characters. Ultimately just enjoy what you want and don't worry about these kinds of debates.

As for SAO, Kirito and Asuna are characters I think could have been a bit better written, but I'm curious to see what a story focusing on other characters might be like, regardless of the main character's gender.

Now I can't speak for the majority of fans but my disdain for the series comes primarily from the first season and I've never gone past episode 24 of the series(second to last episode of the one where spoiler[they escape SAO and are Fairies for some reason]
I'll try to keep it brief since if I had to thoroughly explain why I dislike this series it would be a dang essay since its clearly popular, and its not all bad proven by its many fans.

Basically, in the beginning, we're treated to an interesting(but not unique) premise with an interesting and beautiful world with a lot of flashy and exciting fight scenes.
However very soon we notice that Kirito is a 'perfect' protagonist and harem magnet and the only time he fails is to sorta convince him that being a loner is the safer route.
The in the mid-season finally he beats the last boss in one of the most absurd ways possible and the villain spoiler[admits that he forgot why he became perhaps the most infamous kidnapper in history and ruined and killed so many lives of practically every targeted population: Men, Women, Children and the elderly. Like WTF kayaba]
Then the second season starts and everything likable about asuna has been stripped away to metaphorically turn her into damsel that kirito needs to save. And then the one time she tries to do something we get that spoiler[psudo tentacle rape scene.] And don't let me get started on the second villain I mean first season villain had a shitty end but this one had a shitty everything.

That said I am always interested in hearing news of stuff from this author, just trying to stay clear from the... less enjoyable parts of his series.

Also if anyone is interested in learning more about why SAO is 'bad' there's a few really entertaining and informative series on youtube, the ones I've watched myself were from 'mother's basement' (which helped me put into words and identify what it was exactly about the series that irked me) and I've been told 'digibro' has some extensive reviews.

And finally hey even if I hate SAO for reasons that's no reason why you can't love it for other reasons. So please don't feel that I'm attacking anyone personally for liking this garbage. One man's trash is another man's treasure, just kidding.

A big reason popular stuff gets shit on is "series X is objectively bad for these literary reasons, while series Y is a masterpiece but gets no love, therefore I will actively hate X since it is taking away spotlight that should instead be on Y." However, popular culture is not a zero-sum game, people can like multiple things at the same time.

Where it gets slightly dicey is anime adaptations. Yes, you could argue that series X getting animated means that series Y is getting shafted. However, first off, there are multiple anime studios, so one series getting greenlit doesn't mean another is necessarily dead on arrival. Second, there are a lot of factors that go into a work getting animated, and a lot of people that need to sign off on it. If series Y is even slightly good, then it is very likely that the topic of animating it definitely has come up already, probably multiple times, but it simply lost steam somewhere before getting to 100%.

I truly wonder if it will be better if this upcoming show didn’t have Sword Art Online attached to it and instead be an entirely new series simply by having all the names in it changed, but keeping everything else the same. (Though, as I think about it, this being related to SAO at all is probably the only reason it is getting an anime in the first place) Of course, it may look like a SAO clone at first if it was a new series, but that’s what the execution’s for to distinguish itself. I’m not a fan of SAO by any means, but the premise, visual, voice cast, and author has my interest. I plan on watching this due to it looking like it doesn’t require any viewing of the series beforehand, which sounds good to me and hopefully should not discourage anybody else from also giving it a chance.
