Switch counts as a console? I think of it more as a mobile device, trying to compete against smartphones. Basically, after the Wii U, Nintendo gave up on consoles and tried to rescue their mobile business, with the 3DS having a hard time in the market of smartphones and mobile games.

Switch success is great and all, but it does come off as Nintendo being desperate for headlines. They used to utterly dominate both console and handheld markets and now they're just kind of there, too.

With shit like Doom, Wolfenstein, and eventually Dark Souls Remastered on the Switch, even in reduced graphical fidelity, you damn skippy it's a console.

I can feel the salt in this comment, as if it's coming through my screen. Not trying to be a jerk, but it's a consol/ portable hybrid- as advertised. Spin it anyway you want. It's success ain't gonna dissapear.

When your new console breaks life-time sales of your previous console in your home country within a year, and outpaces your other, best-selling console, you have what is kind of a big deal. Razz

I still stick to my opinion,it had no competition the PS4 and Xbox is like four years old they had no one to compete with,so okay it make record sales in Japan,we all know that Japanese people like portable games,so no surprise there so what does the world wide sales look like right now, they still have a long ways to go in terms of outpacing the four year old PS4 and XBOX and when they do then that would be a big deal to me not that i matter anyway lol.

I don't understand why so many people are filled with such hatred for Nintendo they have to deny the facts of reality and try to downplay the success of the Switch. I'm a life long Nintendo fan but I never tried to argue against the facts when Nintendo's rivals were outselling the Wii U and most Nintendo fans have no problems admitting the Wii U was a failure. Yet for some reason Sony fanboys are unable to be congratulatory to the Switch and I don't understand why they can't be happy for it and instead just write off any facts inconvenient for them as fake news.

Switch was last in November and first in December. Combining NPD totals from Nov/Dec they are last for the holiday season. It has had a very solid first year, but I think the Wii U would have had similar success if it had as many hot new games as Switch had its first year.

Nintendo is competing with itself, the numbers are meaningless. We left Nintendo behind a long time ago.

They are now playing with cardboard. Lol, not hate, senility is the word. They need new blood.

I'm curious to the mini Snes sales its going to claim it surpassed here in the future.

I grew up on Nintendo and to this day never had a console from Sega/Sony/whatever. I'm not salty, I'm disappointed. Because they continually screw up since about the early 1990s. I know they got enough money to fail at multiple generations and that the Switch is somewhat successful. Just like the Wii was somewhat successful. Though, the Wii burned a lot of bridges with their fans and personally I think of the Wii as Nintendos biggest failure. It cemented their position as someone that doesn't matter. Relegated to be the console you also get, not where your major gaming happens.

You got to have some perspective here, Nintendo used to be video gaming. They basically had no competition. And now people pretend like it's a success to quickly catch up with the PS4 or whatever. It's like going to the casino, losing a couple of billion dollars and then call it a success if you win back hundreds of millions. That's not success, it's just sad is what it is. They don't even try to get back on their feet. They just kind of stay down and stubbornly do their own thing, while I'm still hoping for their grand comeback.

It really brightens my day to see the Nintendo Switch dominated the holiday console sales in the U.S.! Smile As long as good and great titles keep coming, the Nintendo Switch has a very bright future.
